Help with Foyer Runners & decor

I would like to put a long runner in this area. It measures 6’7 across and 17’9 in length from front door to stairway. Should I have the runner start at the door frame and extend to the stair step? Should the runner start at the door frame and stop at the end of the wall just before the entrance to the living in the right? (Last picture) Thoughts & input are appreciated.

I think a conventional runner will be too skinny for your space. I would define the entry area just inside the door with the largest rectangular rug that will fit. If you still want to add warmth or floor protection to the rest of the hall, place a conventional runner or another matching or complimentary rug after the entry rug.

You need the door to clear the runner when it’s opened. So start it down there about 3 ft from door. Then make runner about 20” smaller than the hall. This is going to be a custom made piece. Go to a carpet place, pick out something with a larger pattern, and they’ll make the rug. Do served edge. Buy a good pad

I like the idea of having multiple rugs. Maybe two 4x6 rugs?

The point of the multiple rugs escapes me . I like a rug at the door of course but once people have taken off their shoes why a rug at all past the doorway. Make the rug wide enough to fill the hall between the walls at the door. The rug will need to be very flat weave since you have very little space below the door and IMO make sure you also have a rug outside the door that catches most of the snow and wet before entry.

I could see having the rectangle that fills the area right by the door, and if you wanted another narrower runner in the hallway. I don't think it should fill the whole space, and I also don't think it needs to be custom. I think coordinating rugs would work nicely.

I live in New England and I allow visitors to keep their shoes on so we need more than just a welcome Matt to protect our floors in the winter. I have two rugs to solve the issue and it solved my issues well.

Our entryway is about the same size (6' x 13') and I am still looking for a rug or runner for this area. I am following your thread to see what you come up with, and for ideas! Also, you have a beautiful name.

i agree with the above- fill the hallway with a rug just in front of the door. look into ruggables- they are machine washable and very low so they clear our door. After you buy the special pad you can buy additional covers for cheaper so you can change them up as much as you want. i feel like a runner will be hard because how do you center it? when it gets to the stair end it will be akward i think, given theres another door down there too

So that area right in front of the front door measures about 3x6’7. Should it only fill that area? Could it extend past it so it’s under the chandelier area between those two first openings as well?

Our area is not as wide as yours, but wanted to show what we did.

have you considered floor tiles that allow you to customize the size?

HI -- Look at carpet tiles - Flor.com -- this can be the solution and you can start them at the door and make to the size that looks proper to the space . Some other things I would like to add ... I think the lamp or the shade on the side table is a little too large . Also if that door is to the basement , I think it would look better to paint it the same color as the wall ...just to make it less distracting .
