Yes it is possible. On the gate to my condo development we have a plastic flip box. It is hinged on top and you fit it up enter your code and the gate opens. I assume they can do that with a the lock you are considering. By the way we get lots of rain and snow here and it protects the lock.

I have seen plastic cover boxes, and so I think that might work, but I have not heard from anyone else who has used them.

I talked with my brother, and we are considering having a security light with camera installed in the walkway between the gate and the pool area. This would not secure the gate, but at least we would get a video of whoever walks from the gate into the patio/pool area. This would be a lot less expensive than having another electronic deadbolt, although I would still like to have the electronic deadbolt, if it would work. In my area, there is never any snow, but there is a slight chance of rain. It never rains more than one inch a day, and the average monthly rainfall for Jan-Feb is one and a half inches per month, which is the wettest period.

Lars, Does this need to be a deadbolt, or can it just be a gate lock? I see all weather gate locks that are quite inexpensive.

@Lars, I have nothing to add about the covering for your gate, but I would like to ask some questions about your wireless deadbolt.

About five years, I started looking at putting a wireless deadbolt on my house. I have been waiting for the technology to mature. Would you mind sharing the brand of deadbolt that y’all bought and your experience with it? Was it hard to install? Is it reliable? Have you had many glitches? Do you control it with your iPhone?

Bbstx, we just got our wireless deadbolt, and we got it at Lowe's. It is Schlage BE489WB, but you can probably get it at other stores. Ours is black instead of nickel because that's what they had in stock at the store. Home Depot did not have any locks exactly like this. With this one, I can control it with my Smart Phone (I do not have an iPhone), and I can create, monitor, and control up to 100 codes that I create myself. I have not had any glitches with it, but then we just got it. We installed it ourselves, and it was very easy, although we did have to adjust the length of the bolt, which is extremely easy but necessary to check before installing.

I have not seen the wireless locks for outdoor gates, but I will ask the pool company, as they have given me a lot of good information. I am thinking that I could get by with a non-electric lock that just has a keypad for entry and no batteries. I would need one that I could change myself from time to time on site, and I will also install a security light with camera just inside the gate so that I can see who enters the gate. There is already a wall sconce installed there, and so I can just change it to a Kuna light, which we have at the front there and also at our front door here.

I contacted the pool company, and the owner told me to contact a gate company, several of which he recommended to me. I think I will be able to get the information I need from one of those. I might want to get a new gate while I am at it.

I’m interested in what you discover, Lars. DD & DSIL move into their new house in a month. It has a pool. They have 3 under 3. There will be a fence around the pool before they move in, but GT (girl twin) is very curious and clever. The height of the fence may thwart her, but the gate is a weak spot in the perimeter.

bbstx - I'm sure there must have been improvements in pool security since my kids were young but our township required alarms on every door that opened onto the pool area in order to get a CO. Our security system could be programed to sound an alert when doors and windows were opened but the township insisted on individual alarms on each door which were much louder. I didn't need it for my kids since they were older and all were on the swim team but when we had visitors with young kids it did offer some peace of mind. My neighbor had a device that floated in the pool and if the water was disturbed it would sound an alarm.

@maire_cate, This is an existing house and there are no such alarms on the doors but they sure do sound like a good idea. A friend who just installed a pool in an adjacent town had to have those door alarms. DD will be contacting her for more information.

There is no way in heaven or earth that I'd ever put a wireless lock on anything that mattered. Anything you can control from your phone is managed through a server somewhere, and too many corporations and their programmers have clearly demonstrated that they don't care enough about online security.

If merchants and banks can't even keep my credit card number secure, I'm not about to trust some anonymous server that isn't subject to independent audit to hold the virtual keys to my door or gate.

You do what you want, but I'm sticking with keys I can hide in my pocket, thanks.

We bought this door closure at our local (L.A.) HD to take to Cathedral City this week-end, and we will try to install it on our security front door ourselves. If we cannot, we have a handyman coming on Saturday, and perhaps he can do it. I want to at least get an outdoor closer for the gate, but it must be weather-proof, and I do not think this one is. Maybe the handyman will know. I don't know whether he works on gates, but perhaps he can recommend someone to me. The pool guy recommended Precision Gates in Palm Springs, but it appears that they are in Yucca Valley, which is not that close.

Gates for yards with pools should be self closing (probably is code in CA) and there should be gate springs available.

BBSTX, nothing like a good old fashioned padlock for a pool gate. The alarms on doors WILL drive the adults bonkers. :)
