Should I use patterned tile?

We are in the beginning stages of planning our forever home. We have the floorplan and the land. I am already jumping ahead to decorating ideas. I really like the patterned tiles although I wish I could find smaller patterns. Whatever tile we decide on will be installed in the master bath, master closet, and laundry room, all of which adjoin.

I know patterned tile is a trend, which brings the problem. I am a decorate it and leave it forever kind of girl. And I am worried I may tire of my busy tile in 10 years.

Any ideas of how to incorporate some pop in an otherwise dull space?

If it matters, the colors I am planning on using are gray and sage green.

Ok...breathe. "Beginning stages" means we are at the BLUE PRINT stage. Excellent. Congratulations! Good for you! Way to go!

Now...lets get things in order:

1. Foundation work (in-floor heating is to be added or nixed at this stage)

2. Framing

3. Roofing

4. Envelope work (windows, doors, insulation)

5. Stairs, interior walls, interior hardware

6. Kitchen bath layout materials

7. Flooring decisions finalized, purchased and brought on site

8. Finishing items (backsplashes, paint, trim, etc)

Whew! Lots of things need to be decided before you get to your 'little finishes'. I know you are DESPERATE to put your touches on the house...but first things first. The foundation.

Work through your issues one at a time. This prevents you from being overwhelmed by decisions. The MOST IMPORTANT things right now are the BONES in the house. The foundation, the quality of the construction materials, the framing, the joists, the trusses the roofing material! If you can't keep the walls standing and the roof from leaking nothing else matters.

You have plenty of time to go out and find an Certified Interior Designer who can help you pull things together. You have MONTHS before you need to make any interior finishing decisions. Months and months and months.

I happen to be an "envelope girl" which means I DEMAND a great build quality for the 'inside the walls' type of stuff. I can live with primed drywall. I can always paint later!

But I cannot restuff the walls with better insulation. I cannot rehang my interior doors because the noise intrusion is too much (d@mn hollow core doors!). I cannot repair my own roof. And windows are completely off the list.

So...take your time. Get a designer on board to help with some of these design questions. And remember to get quality in the stuff that no one talks about...like windows and roofs.

But don’t stop looking at design options. You will tire of some and desire others you are not aware of yet. Make mood boards with your likes. Let them evolve. Live with your ideas and see what comes of it.
