Rotten door frame / casing

last modified: 6 years ago

Hello,

Any advice on this? :

I noticed some rot in the top corner of my door frame, exterior. That little bit of rot, turned out to be quite substantial.

The caulk on the top of the door frame / casing (the top piece that goes horizontal above the exterior of the frame, was pretty brittle.

Presumably, the water was:

A) Getting in through the brittle caulk

B) Coming down from the roof in between the brick and the stucco

I plan to:

A) remove all the rotten wood

B) cut replacement wood / door frame molding to size

C) Caulk all crevices I see before affixing the wood / door frame molding into place

D) Heavily caulk all exposed sections

E) Paint. (unless the molding comes pre-painted

If the cause of the rot was water getting in through the brittle caulk, this solution should solve the problem. If the cause of the rot was water coming down from teh roof, between the brick and the stucco and running into the door frame (thereby causing rot), the wood will rot again and I'll know that the source of the rot is coming from above.

If any experienced DIY home repair folk could weigh in on whether or not this seems like a reasonable approach, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thank you!
