Two questions about this quilt

This has been one of those quilts I really looked forward to making. it didn't work out the way I planned, so I'm improvising. On the original pattern, it had a red border, which gave it some "pop". However, the red I picked didn't work at all. That red was more of an explosion than a "pop". I decided on a piano key border, but I think it's pretty bland. It still needs some "pop". So What do you suggest that would add interest?

A little while ago, I was cutting strips left from the project for a piano key border. I have 83 strips and need about 113. I was just about cut to a strip off several fat quarters when it dawned on me that maybe I should add some white keys to the mix. What do you think?

I think if you add a narrow border in one of the more intense colors, like green or red or blue, then add the piano keys, it would look great! And I think some white piano keys would look fine. Binding it with one of the intense colors, too, would give a nice finish.

It’s really pretty - I don’t think it’s bland at all.

I agree with Donna. I don't think I would use anything to make it 'pop' as it would appear out of place (at least to me) and ruin the serene, calming, and peaceful effect the quilt is giving now. It's beautiful.

I love 30s fabrics and this quilt makes me smile. I did originally like your red border selection but maybe the piano keys will be a better solution to your dilemma. Good job.

I agree with all above, nice quilt. And I love piano keys borders, have done my last 3 quilts that way, only in blacks and brights, the background on 2 was black and the other one had black in it. But white would be the way to go on yours.

I think the color combination is very pleasing. And I agree with above as well. Show us another pic when finished!

Love the 30's fabrics. What would worry me about the piano keys is that they will be vertical and horizontal, whereas the quilt is at 45 degree angles. How about flying geese?

Wow, that may be why it looked so bad. I thought they were too wide. All I know is that it didn't look right (Sometimes, I know it doesn't look right but don't know why.).

I went to the quiltshop yesterday and bought another piece of red for the border. (This one doesn't overwhelm the top.) I'll just put that red border on it and go on down the road. (I hate it when a quilt doesn't work and I don't know how to fix it.) If I still don't like it, I will give it away.

I'd use a bright narrow inner border and then a solid white border. Let the quilting be piano key but it would preserve the calm, peaceful look. Just my two cents.
