Seal shiplap gaps?

I have a contractor that I am a little iffy on who has installed shiplap and the paint doesn't look very good in the gaps, you can see parts where the paint touches between the two boards and other spots where it is empty. I am seeing videos where people seal those gaps but I have also seen others where the gaps stay open. Are you supposed to put a small amount of sealant in between the gaps to make it easier to paint?

I just want it to be done "right", I don't trust contractors anymore.

Your contractor and 100’s of others do not cut or install properly. "Traditional shiplap has a rabbet (or groove) cut into the top and bottom, which allows the pieces to fit together snugly, forming a tight seal"

What you have is boards not abutting. So, go ahead and seal. What you have is not ship lap.

Faux shiplap is a dated look anyway. Take it down and have a nice clean wall. What you have will allow moisture, grime and critters to get in the cracks. Sealing is a bandaid and won’t help the underlying issue.
