What temperatures are you talking about? That certainly could be an issue. If you also watered the plant with very cold water that wouldn't help.

Saying you had to crush the original potting soil with a knife doesn't sound too good either. Hard soil can generally be soaked so that it crumbles away easily. Crushing it dry could do a lot of damage to the roots.

At this stage you can only wait and see what happens. Don't let the soil get too wet and keep the plant warm and away from cold draughts. Remember, heating in a house will dry out the top of the soil while underneath it's still quite moist. Always check.

Inside is normal room temperature. Outside is like -2C and the potting compost could have been very cold. I didn't think that it might be a problem. I didn't water it with cold water.

About the soil, it didn't occur to me at all to soak it before, it is the first time I encounter such soil and I did not think. I was very careful with the roots though so whatever damage I did I doubt that it was severe.

I mist the plant every day to help with dry air. I placed it nearer to the light, but not in direct light. I guess I should wait to see what happens and hope for the best.
