I would look for two comfortable armchairs to group with the sofa with a small round coffee table so they have a seating/conversation area. A round table with 4 chairs is great for board games or snacks. The thing we enjoyed most in our basement was a ping pong table. And that gives them something active and fun to do. You can fold it up when not in use to give you more space. I would paint some sort of colorful and fun graphic on the walls, so the room has some personality and is a place they want to hang out. Have your teens design and help you decorate.

Beth -Ages are from 11-16; boys and a girl. There’s a screen they use for gaming in the next room. Yes kids spend the night all the time.

Beesneeds- they want seating that can easily convert to something to sleep on. And they don’t want anything that may break or shelving that gets in the way of soccer ball and football being thrown around !

Look for Convertible Chairs or Futon Chairs with arm rests. No one wants to sit in chairs with no arm rests. These chairs convert to a beds. You can get them in fun colors also.

Get a table that can store board games, cards, etc. A digital frame that can be loaded easily with pictures of their friends.

A microwave for popcorn, a fridge for water.

A place with menus, My budget for pizza hit the wall by the time they were in high school. So I figured once you were in high school the teens that came to hangout could all chip in and order their own pizza to hang out downstairs.

An air popper for pop corn is healthier, microwave popcorn is a toxic nightmare. Do you really want them preparing food down there? Could lead to big messes. A flip couch or futon are good for kids who will be rough on furniture. If they are already throwing balls around down there, what about an indoor basketball net thingy, have seen them at Home Depot.

Microwave popcorn is really bad, but air poppers can be messy And are unitaskers. However, it is easy to do homemade microwave popcorn. A mini fridge can be great. Maybe work in a food station if you consider going in this direction to keep everything in one place.

My air poppers are from the 80s, so single task they may be, but they have fully served their usefulness. I also only paid $8 or less for each one, and one has lasted for maybe 15 years in this family.

Thanks for the ideas - I incorporated many of the suggestions. All the seating is convertible for sleeping. Especially love the couchbed ! Decided not to put fridge and microwave so they’d come up for air once In a while :)

Looks nice. Add a floor lamp so they have some ambient light. Instead of a gallery wall, consider a large framed cork board so they can add posters, photos, ticket stubs, etc. as they wish.

Budget permitting, of course, and IF there is a drain access already nearby/available, you might consider adding a powder room (if there isn't already one in the basement). IF there is nothing but space beneath the stairs and/or if there is a water heater -- water supply line -- there, adding your powder room adjacent to that closet -- perhaps an "L" shaped room, with the door facing the side wall rather than the larger room, enabling the toilet to not be seen from the doorway or the activity room would be well worth considering.
