Kitchen Layouts

Hello, I have been working on some kitchen layouts for my house and wanted to see what you guys thought. I am taking out a wall between the kitchen and dining room to make one big room. The sink is currently located at the center (first) window. In layout #1 I don't have to move the sink but I might have to add a prep sink since the distance from sink to fridge is 13 feet. Layout #2 means moving the sink which can be costly.

Some questions I have is, is it worth the cost of a prep sink? Should I just move the sink to the second window? Is the corner pantry in the first layout a good idea? Any other comments or concerns is appreciated!

Sorry about the quality of the pictures. I had to take a picture of the computer screen. First picture is the current layout. Second and third are what I am thinking about doing.

Plan #1, with a couple of changes. It is disproportionately large, but I like the layout, especially the separate clean-up zone near the dining area.

I moved the fridge up closer to the range, moved the prep sink over, and made the aisle in front of the fridge 48". Moving the prep sink over leaves space on the end of the island to drop groceries to be loaded to the fridge and pantry. The pantry and counter to the right of the fridge are the same depth as the standard fridge box, and I drew deeper upper cabinets on that wall. The range is centered between the windows. I would suggest using as many drawer bases as possible.

I just noticed after posting the 2 designs are flipped 😬. When I say Layout #1 I mean the 3rd picture and Layout #2 is the second picture.

Neither improves on the original. Both are too long proportionately and are poorly zoned. Plus there’s about 70K of cabinets there. Completely disproportionate.

Thanks for the feedback! I never thought about making the upper cabinets deeper on that wall. How deep are you talking?

If you make the base cabinets the same depth as the fridge box, or pull standard depth bases out from the wall, maybe 28.5" plus 1.5" overhang, you'll have an extra 6". IIRC, Ikea makes uppers which are 15" or 18" deep. If given a choice, I'd use 15" deep.

In plan number 1, you may have a pile of dirty dishes in/near in sink after cooking, just a few feet from people sitting at the dining room table. If you’re loading the dishwasher while guests are lingering at the table, the DW door will be very close to 2 of the chairs. These things would make me nuts, but think about how it would flow for you.
