Patterns V

Been a busy January for me, but I finally got to the Patterns thread.

Past threads:

Patterns II

Patterns III

Patterns IV

Just a couple from me...

Hosta Deep Blue Sea backlit

Painted Lady butterflies

At one time I had seven Painted Ladies on this zinnia. I should have named the cultivar 'Brothel'.

Since we love IDs, here's one from me with a hint so skimpy you may wonder what drugs I'm on (nitrous oxide?)

So what is the anther answer?

I'm guessing floral_uk might mean that the anthers belong to gas plant (Dictamnus albus). Am I right?.

Thank you tj, I look forward to this every year now. What a wonderful start tj & sandyslopes.

I was going to say I think you have to be careful around the mystery ID....unless audry and I are mistaken.

    Yes, Dictamnus albus.

Yes, Floral knew right away and, knowing her, I doubt she needed the nitrous oxide hint.

Oh, funny! I thought tj was saying he might be a little loopy because of what I thought may have been a dental issue taken care of earlier in the day, lol!

I've heard of gas plant, but I don't have one. Nice anthers!

@sweet_betsy - what kind of caterpillars are those? Are they tetrio sphinx, and are they common at your location? What are they eating?

These caterpillars appeared in my garden last summer. I think they are these -spanish moth caterpillars. They were only on my crinums and that seems to fit the description given at the link since crinums are a member of the amaryllidaceae.

I knew you would be welcoming too! I like this thread for the same reason. But this is my first year at it so I will take a closer look for this years garden. I also have a “Burning Bush.” Does not get as vibrant. But my neighbors have a tree version, planted way back before they were ruled invasive as a tree. The bushes are not considered invasive. When I had an arborit’s to do some work, he said it was the biggest one he’d ever seen. Let me see if I can find a pic.

Here’s one that show the size but not full color.

tsugajunkie z5 SE WI ♱ thanked djacob Z6a SE WI
  • 6 years ago

That is big in tree form! Too bad they're invasive in so many places. I thought my shrub was big at 6 ft. but nowhere near the size of that tree!
