Stone Front Needs Updating on '50s Ranch House

We have a '50s ranch house with real stone on the front and we are trying to update our home on a budget. We would love to paint the house gray but what do we do with this ugly stone?? Does anyone have pics of whitewashed or painted stone houses that we could possibly duplicate? Any other ideas would be great. Thank you!!

You can stain stone with masonry stain to go gray. Masonry paint will work well for you too and you have more color selections. Pick a gray that is lighter but the same gray tone as your siding - and go for it. Great profile, old fashioned colors - i'd paint it, then make sure all my window and door trim was made consistent.

I would add landscaping. Then your eyes will be drawn to the shrubs, trees and flowers instead of the stone

Paint the downspouts gray too. Get some decent-looking house numbers.
Remove the awnings. Paint the main door & trim a spiffy color - navy, sage, yellow, red.

And, as mentioned above, landscape!

I am posting this picture because upon first glance, I do not like the stonework. But, by making the most it by painting the windows and sashes a complimentary color, making the front door special, I think it works without having to paint the stone.

This advice might be late in the game but upon first glance, I'd say changing out the windows to full french picture windows and updating the doors with paint or totally changing them out would fully transform this home. The stone isn't so bad.

I like JudyG Designs idea..........i'm not opposed to the stone at all really. If you paint the house gray and add some color to the doors with a different trim color, it would probably be adorable. Add your landscaping along the house and it would be very nice.

The two front doors are confusing. A wide sidewalk directing people to the door you wish to be used would be an improvement. The door you want people to use should also be the door that gets the new paint job in a new color. I agree that foundation shrubs would enhance the house.

I agree. Isolating a door for entry and landscape shrubs are a great idea for update.

The main house and addition have 2 different types of stone ,staining will make it look more more uniform ...the left side looks like form stone,cement, the right is smaller stacked ledge stone..I agree some nice shrubs will take the eye away from stone...Paint the front door pale lemon ,keep the side to match the trim...

Our home has the same stone. A realtor referred to it as Tennessee stone (in NJ)
