You know, THAT just might be one of the kindest, wisest suggestions. Your husband did something loving and wonderful for you. Just kiss him, thank him, make sure it's watered well and treat it as if it is the PERFECT thing for him to have done. If you go and redo what he did, what message does THAT send him? I will let it alone and see how it does. We just redid that bed with lots of good soil over the past few months and there were already a bunch of worms we saw in there when digging about lately so it sounds like it'll be just fine. thanks for the responses!

I just want to re- emphasize what was said above about how important it is to keep newly planted roses WELL WATERED. Any transplanting, no matter how gentle, will damage some of the tiny feeder roots. Thus, the plant will need more than a normal amount of water to be able to stay hydrated in the short term. After it settles down, it will start growing more healthy roots, and from the outside it will look as if it is "just sitting there, doing nothing", when in actuality it is recovering from being transplanted, and growing new roots. So, I think it is a good idea to leave it alone now, except for extra water. No digging it up, no feeding it, no spraying with anything.

Oh, one thing - if it had a huge amount of top growth (way taller than the pot it was growing in) you might prune off 1/3 - 1/2 of that, right now, so that the damaged roots don't have to spend all of their energy trying to support too much top growth. That is the one thing I have noticed will kill any kind of transplanted plant - if it is large, with a small root ball, and is just planted without any pruning.

Jackie, I am curious if that plant is a tea , do you still have to prune 1/3 or 1/2 off. You know the saying goes "Dont Prune". It gets so sulky or worst. Or anyone can answer. I always wonder ?

I have not pruned in these situations and have let the plant make the decision what it can support. Working well here. I love a bigger naturalistic looking plant.

I especially would not prune a Tea rose.

I don't prune transplants from pots to the ground UNLESS I have accidentally destroyed the root ball in the process.
