why posts in concrete?

I'm debating on how to set my fence posts.

There seems to be a big debate about using concrete for fence or mailbox posts. The concrete people say it's a must, but don't really go much further to defend the case. The no-concrete people say it will just rot your posts and it's more junk to dig out when they do rot.

I can see how concrete would add some weight to the post, but that doesn't really answer how it will stop lateral load any more than packing stone or native soil tightly back into a well dug hole (2'-3' deep)..

I've seen entire barns erected with only a biscuit of concrete for a "footer" and dirt packed back into the hole..

thoughts? suggestions?
