Ready to replace the sofa. Is red too crazy?

This is the front room of a bed and breakfast inn in New England. I’m ready to replace the sofa that came with the inn, with something more comfortable. My mind tells me go blue, but I’m wondering if red would work. Barn/fish shack red, nothing bright. Thoughts? (Renovations in progress so there are paint cans and flooring on the coffee table and dust mats on the floor. Please forgive.)

Walls are Ace Bisquey. A foggy green.

Get everything into place and then decide on furniture. Personally I would love to see a sofa in a red-based tartan. It would certainly keep the country vibe going.

Yes to red (not too bright, as you said) for a warm and cozy look!

What color are you painting and what other changes are you making?

Paint is for another room. No changes here except the sofa. The paint color is throughout the house. The rug is in perfect condition. The artwork is original and done by local artists. I thought about a different coffee table, but the table gets used. There are books and games on the lower shelf, cookies, candy and fruit on the table along with a few coffee table books about the area.

Red works so much better than many people imagine - go for it!

Have I got a deal for you. Hancock and Moore is closing out this cover on their 6205-3 Dana sofa, its top grain red leather, solid maple frame and 8-way hand tied suspension deck. You would have to decide if this is too bring or too modern, but these are half-price while they last, I believe they have eight covers left (these are not in stock, built to order). Best made sofa in the USA and under $ 2K. Photo was supplied by customer of mine, so cushions are a bit askew. Contact me at keepingroom@gmail.com if interested.

Thekeepingroom, thank you! It’s beautiful but a bit too contemporary for my antique beach house. Great deal!

What about getting pillows for the red accent in your space so when you tire of it you can inexpensively change decor and color. Also, not sure how large your rug is. Would like to see the size and color better before determining if the red sofa would work. If rug is large enough it would look better to have part of rug under the sofa legs. Example below

    Nantucket red….perfect, even for Maine!

This fabric sounds as if it is resilient to everything.

Could do buffalo check in red, but I like this one. Maybe red trim where they have yellow on the cushions and arms.

Judy, that’s a perfect choice. There are a lot of yellows used in the artwork in the room.

Deco, I LOVE Buffalo check and have been looking for a place to use it. I always end up thinking it’s too farmland country Rather than beachhouse country. But I’m probably just being conservative.

I love a red couch. Great backdrop for holiday decorating.

auntthelma - you see it a lot in French country homes; it pairs with very sophisticated antique pieces too. I have black and white buffalo check drapes I won from Country Curtains before they closed. If anyone liked their curtains, Vermont Country Store seems to have bought out their stock and they have a "curtain collection" catalog.

Jodie, the rug is 5x7. Red, navy with soft greens and rose colors.

Get the red. It really is extremely versatile. Some seasons I tuck mine up with matlasse bed covers and other times I use duvet covers in a beautiful buffalo check. Every time my friends stop by they are amazed at the things that can be done with what they thought was going to be a colossal mistake. Let us know what you decide. Best to you.

You've got a lot going on in this room. Your colours are all mostly neutral so a red couch will certainly fit in and look great. But. All your other surfaces have different colours and different finishes. You should look at your room as a whole and look to unify some of the other elements. Your coffee table is a nice colour and would look good with a red couch. How about using that same cream colour on your other side table and your fireplace and your corner cabinet? Then replace the rug with a cream rug?

I don't see a problem with your current other elements. They are all solid neutrals and work together okay as far as I can see, and your floral rug grounds it all nicely. You can tell better than I if something isn't quite right but I think a red sofa with definitely lift the room a notch or two!

Never occurred to me to paint the corner cabinet! I got it at an antique store, but I don’t believe it is valuable I think it’s a great idea!

The dining set is good quality. I wouldn’t paint that. The side tables are heirlooms. I would never paint them but perhaps they can live somewhere else and be replaced by paintable tables.

The dark red is the sofa and the multi is the pillow cover. I like that it adds a small amount of yellow as there is a lot of yellow in the artwork in the room. I’ll post a picture when the sofa is delivered. Thank you for your help!

Pillow fabric, auntthelma, is perfect for your B&B. I just saw it on a chair. Is there a Bernie & Phyl’s in Maine? They carry this new line of furniture “England” but made in the US. I think you could call it semi-custom, as the springs in the cushions can be chosen for feel and no upcharge for Sunbrella. The cost for 2 sofas, loveseat, 5 x 8 wool rug was $3,000.00, then 12 % off , then anther promotional discount. Sofas came in at around $888.00 in Sunbrella (gorgeous fabric texture) and two pillows, in chose of fabric (about 80/100 choices).

It was a very good day for my clients.

I’ve got Maine on my mind as I am in the middle of the newest Olive Kitteridge book.
