The dining room rug is too small: the chairs at the ends are already off the rug. The rug needs to be 4’ wider and 4’ longer than the table top measurement to allow people to sit it them while still on the rug.
In a gray and beige room (the coloring on my monitor may be a bit off), you need some color...art, fabrics, accessories, window treatments.

You don't have that much work to do although buying art & good decor can & should take time. Wall paint, furniture, floors, window treatments...all good!

I agree the dining rug is a tad too small. Also that adding colour through art will help. It’s quite nice so neutral too. You also could add some plants. That would add green.

Please show us a picture with the dining table rug gone. I think you will enjoy the look of that space. It may be less contrasty.

The more I look at these areas the more I like them. They are so pretty.

You need color and bling. Upgrade to the larger dining rug and pull colors from the fireplace art for it. I'm not a fan of table runners, but one that drops off the ends of the table and picks up more color would be OK. You do need some metallic shine here, IMO. Candlesticks, bowls, vases could add that bit of gleam and glow that will warm things up some.

Adding drapery panels could bring in some color.

You have some red accents now. Is that your preferred color or do you have others?

Change out the vase for color. Is that a round mirror above it? Colorful florals on dining table. A color tray.

I only added red accents to try to pick up some color form the picture over the fireplace.

I’m not a pro, but pulling the reds, oranges and yellows from your painting will do wonders. You need to start looking at accessories (rugs, pillows, vases, etc) in those colors. Here’s hoping one of the generous pro Houzzers will photoshop and/or send you pictures of accessories that will brighten your room. The only other (possibly) less expensive change would be the fabric on your dining room chairs.

Start looking at rugs in Overstock and Wayfair to see how inexpensive a cheerful new rug can be. I’d start with that and accessorize with colors from it.

Switch out the table runner and centerpiece on the dining table to something with colors.

I believe all rugs pictured are too small. Pick a color you like and buy new larger rugs in those colors. Then replace small decor (vases, pillows, art) to follow along with the new color(s).

I’m not a fan of the Gray Train, so I’d pick a deep strong green or navy and build on that. Not a creamy green or navy since that might clash with your gray.

If you remove the rug from the dining room, DO go out and get stick-on felt pads for all of the chair legs and the table legs, too....protect the floor.

Bring in more color with a new larger rug in the fireplace area. That furniture arrangement is a little weird. I would take one of the sofas from the tv area and place it facing the fireplace with the 2 matching chairs flanking the fireplace. Then move the comfy looking chair to the tv area replacing the couch that backs up to the dining room. You have brought some color into the room from the painting but you need to have some larger things with your chosen colors. I would paint the tv console red and bring in a throw in your chosen colors. In an open living space like this you want the colors repeated throughout the space to different degrees. My thoughts is to focus reds in the fireplace and tv space with more yellow in the dining. You want some in all areas though. With all the windows and wonderful natural light you must get I would also bring in LOTS of large plants. Living things ad life to a room. Consider bringing in color in draperies to soften the windows. Do you need all that seating in the dining room regularly? The rug is fine IF you take away the captains chairs at the end and Put them in another room or against a wall until needed. I like a rug in any living space to help define and area, protect wood floors and bring in color.

I like the furniture pieces but it needs more oomph! The table is gorgeous. Super easy to change the runner (or just skip) and put bright centerpieces. All of the rugs look too small, I agree. Pick at least one bright and cheery
One to offset all the gray tones. Home goods or overstock/Wayfair or world market has sooo many easy centerpieces they are bright and inexpensive. You can also spray paint a vase or some home decor piece easily to the color you want.

Art, nice fabrics and accessories in a good accent color can bring life to an otherwise monochromatic room. You have a good background....now add the color.

Easy. All your rugs look too small. Remove dining room rug altogether. Replace TV area and fireplace area rugs with much bigger colourful persian rugs. Not identical to each other. They should be different patterns but with the same colours. Done. Your open concept room will suddenly come to life. Everything else in the room will then make sense.

Not a pro. I would change either the rug or the upholstery to a more colorful option.

Your spaces are really nice and you’ve got great bones. What colors are YOUR favorite colors from your picture? Looks like you can go lots of different ways - purple, blue, burgundy, red, orange or yellow. Here are some pillows that I found that match and bring some pattern to your rooms. I wouldn’t use them all together, but just to give you some ideas

Add some green plants. It will add much-needed colour and life. Pothos is great for non-green thumbs and need very little light.

I'd re-think the red as the accent colour. The red you have chosen is very dull and rusty, not really a lively colour at all. I would go with golden yellow. It seems to be very popular with gray in what I've been seeing.

And a big one near the dining table.

DR has more uniform appearance, so I like this large pattern with warms and opposite green [and can take that much color, especially under a table].

instead of changing major pieces, I suggest creating more personality with accessories that have more color and bring out your personality... start with one area like the console table with the two vases on it...heres a couple inspiration pics to show how you can create a vignette on the console... a vase with tall greenery on one side and then maybe a piece of art on the other side that leans up against the wall.

Everdebz...I love that rug, the style, the colors AND the OP can also chose a similar idea in other color tones. Some of the other posters suggested rugs that are just as dull looking as what is already there. The rug you found however, does appear to have similar colors to the art piece above the fireplace, so good choice. I agree that the red pillow accessories chosen are dark. She needs bright reds. So many colors go with gray...reds, blues, yellows, pinks, fuchsia, greens.

The dining room carpet should be large enough for all the chair legs to be on the carpet when they are pulled out from the table. Also, loose the table runner, it isn’t adding anything to your beautiful table.

Adding in bright Kate Spade type of green would like awesome in this space! I‘d also recommend swapping out the plain rug. Good luck! Very pretty and simple, but the green pop would look so great.

Everdebz.............I really like the rugs. Unfortunetly, it seems the first one only comes in size 5x7.

By the fireplace I currently have an 8x10 and everyone seems to think it needs to be bigger so I'm thinking I need a 9x12....

I do not like your painting. Your room is glamorous and the painting is so country. Can you find something more glamorous and framed ?

If I may say, with several windows around, you did real good with neutrals there, neat and trim.
