Ideas for a large dropzone?

We have a piling home and the lower area a a good sized conditioned space. We want to build a drop zone, but the span is larger than we really need. We figured we would build the dropzone on the side that is about 12" deep (pic attached) as it would be enough for a small bench. The reason for this side is because we figure the deeper side (also attached) would be better suited for nice storage shelves. Thoughts? Additionally, the area we are thinking of putting the dropzone in spans more than 12' and we don't need a 12' bench. Anyone have any idea on building a dropzone area with shelves incorporated? Like 6' of dropzone with 3' of shelves or something on either side?

Really depends on what will be dropped.

Do you have a family with teenagers who will be coming in with winter coats, boots, sports gear, knapsacks and a bunch of friends with pizzas? Or a couple in a warm climate who needs to set down the car keys, purse and wallet?

By “drop zone”, do you mean a place for everyone to drop their stuff when they come home? I would not encourage a drop zone if that is what you mean. It will always be a mess unless you have specific storage. You would need a hall tree or a row of hooks for coats and jackets and a place below each hook for boots or shoes. I suggest a designated storage basket for each person to put books, purses, and any other things they normally need to put down in the drop zone.

I guess I don’t know what ‘drop zone’ means. A mud room? A utility room? Closet?

I would suggest a mudroom and drop zone. Make sure you have a spot for everything. I like cupboards that have organizers inside that you can adjust etc. We have a mudroom with hooks for the kids, boot storage, three pull out drawers for shoes, storage for hats, sports stuff etc. We also have shelving that is open and then cupboards that are closed. Inside one of the cupboards if have a shelf for my bags and things and the a shelf that has three bins in it. Kids get home from school and put any notes and their agendas in there. Works great!

Look for hall trees to see if you find one that interest you.

There are other options as well.

You might consider a bench for sitting on while removing shoes you place beneath the bench and with a board with hanging hooks for hats and coats and book bags above it.

You might adapt an old cabinet you already have:

Do you still have a deep analog tv cabinet? If so, it might be usable if you alter it some.

Sorry me too , only drop zone I have heard of is when aircrafts are dropping stuff in zones thus drop zones hehe* don’t mind me though just curious as the others :))
