I really like floral white, but it will need to work with your other whites and it is easier to find a paint color that works with the colors of the floors, cabinets, tile and fixtures than it is to find floors, cabinets and fixtures that go with a specific white wall or trim color.

Regardless of how a color is often or usually referred to, what matters is how it actually looks to the person making that decision in the context of his or her own home with its own matrix of natural light, ceiling height, direction of fenestration, and even the color of the floors. I’m not “defending” a particular color, lol—-just point out that because one person says a paint has pink or green or purple undertones is not necessarily true factually and may not be true in the proposed setting.

I am always amazed when people buy paint in the paint store or department from a tiny card under fluorescent lights without ever even taking it to the room I for which it’s intended. Of course, they aren’t bothered by arcane discussions of paint, either!

Alice-Home Depot also sells clear plastic sheets that you can paint on and move around the room. They're about $3.00 for 3 and I found them very handy when I chose my bedroom color because they just peel off and stick on to a new spot. No damage to existing paint.

Usually i buy a foam board at Walmart or Target for $1 and paint the sample colors on that. Can easily be moved to different locations in the room.
Re: painting cabinets - I changed mine from espresso to blue-gray with off-gray uppers and am very happy with the results

Lower cabinet color is Sherwin Williams Stormcloud. I got the idea from a picture on Houzz, tried a sample and it was perfect!

I would just caution that adding white to a color will affect the basic color in unpredictable ways. It is better to select color that is close to what you believe/perceive from chips to be near what you want. A qualified color specialist can help tremendously in selecting good colors and assessing your light conditions. My preference is using samples from samplize.com. They are larger, have peel off backing to enable sticking to your wall surface and moving them around. Saves money and time. I have collection of most frequently used colors along with several of my favorites. This way no excess paint to dispose of or brushes or boards or anything. I have no connection to the company just find these very useful. Good luck.

Great. I recently used Pale Oak in a home and the natural light was not good. My client wanted a gray direction and we tried several samples and Pale Oak was the most grayish in her light. Her flooring is beige and trim is mainly dark brown. It was quite a challenge. So if you want a offwhite be very careful. I would take a cabinet door and your tile to good paint store and have them color match to your cabinets. Putting more than one offwhite in a space almost never works out. I tried reading all the way back to the beginning of your thread but I am still not sure what you are looking for? The kitchen in your home where Mom stays? In her home. I used a lighter shade from the same SHW paint strip as my wall color in adjoining great room. Sometimes stores won’t mix half strength samples, but you can add some lighter color on your own.

Hi Flo, yes scrolling back has become a bit difficult. Where I am at is attempting to put some colors together for a ADU for my mom. Talking about helping her move here with us one day, when she is ready. She and I had picked this tile selection and I’m getting stock cabinets, white appliances and vinyl plank flooring, budget restrictions. The ‘apartment’ is no where near complete, plumbing, electrical etc still in planning, but i can’t just not try to pick colors. I am painting cabinets. Started blog with searching for whites for cabinets, but realized I didn’t want to try to have whites in cabinets bc I will have a white of some shade on all walls throughout the same, with that said have been looking at a very light blue gray for lower cabinets and bamboo laminate for counters. Trim throughout I’m just using a true white (ultra white), most natural light is coming in from west direction. Have looked at a terra cotta tile to match the rusty brown color in the kitchen tile for the nearby living area underneath and behind a small wood burning fireplace. So with all that said, I guess search is for a light gray blue for cabinets and a light wall color without falling into the grays, more off whites. Gathering samples soon, have been out ill for some time now, but on my way to recovery. Going to post this now and see what I wrote. I will be able to have paint store mix some samples of gray blues at half or even quarter strength for cabinets. Looking at Normandy, Providence Blue, Shale, Stormcloud, seeing if these might be a good start, hopefully enough blue in these grays to go with the tile

OK, I think I've got it now. Thanks for that summary. I love the tiles and their colors. The background on the tiles look creamy, then your appliances will be more of a stark white, so this is your dilemma. You will need to straddle between pure white and creamy white along with cool gray blues and warm golds! Quite a mix! I would tend to go much to the darker blue/gray on your lower cabinets so you don't have a fight with light colors. I think I would wait to select paint until all your kitchen decisions are made. Paint is available in all colors, so easier to find once you get to that point. I would lean toward light and bright for flooring and other tiling and then you can bring in a rug to coordinate colors and furniture. I will see what I can find to help you visualize the combinations. bbl

Yes, I believe she will prefer a lighter brighter atmosphere. She has stated to stop working this project bc she is uncertain if she will make it here, but that has never stopped me in the passed. I have to believe she will make it here and trying to have it pleasing for her. Lately the decisions became a bit overwhelming for her I could tell, so I am making decisions. Have to limit accent rugs, she may trip and she also stated no hardware on cabinets for they will catch her clothes :). Presently she literally lives in the kitchen, so to say, loves to cook!!! Understatement. Still very very independent at 82? Or 83? We don’t discuss age, lol.

Our house is small with no room to add on or I would just add another room or have her in my guest room, might be the alternative, I guess depends on her mobility situation, somewhat a dilemma. I know the guest house situation will add value and taxes (bitter/sweet) to my property, hard for me to really deal with, but have to figure it out. Apartments here are unaffordable for her and not equipped with aging aspects to accommodate.

Alice. I have done a color analysis for you using the photos of your tile. Of course, this is just a broad estimate of your colors because Internet photos are not accurate but this might help you with stepping off point. The blue/gray is SW Granite Peak 6250; the cabinet and wall color could be SW Neutral Ground 7568. SW Olde World Gold is gold color, and SW Burlap 6137 is warm beige tone. I would try SW Alabaster for trim color. It is warm off white and would work well.

You could do cabinets in Alabaster “satin” finish as well as trim, then use Alabaster “flat or matte” finish on walls. Keep number of colors you use low for small space. Using different “finishes” (sheen level) will create slightly different visual looks without confusion of too many colors.

Or cabinets, burlap maybe, getting somewhere. Paint is becoming better with the matts being more durable, I think for walls and trim same color but satin/or semi?

Walls flat or matte, trim satin is my favorite, but you could use semi-gloss. Not on cabinets though. Too shiny.

Earlier I had mentioned the burlap for the cabinets but that might take away from the bamboo countertops, you think?

Semi-gloss paint is NOT too shiny for cabinets. Not.

As to Burlap on cabinets, I wouldn’t. Just keep uppers and walls quiet. The tile will be the pop of color along with lower cabinets.

Flo, i didn’t forget us, i like the Granite Peak, probably for base cabinets! Got small samples and got some flooring sample, what i might think goes, out of town tomorrow, but will show you them together. Had some late coffee this evening, just test painted antique white in my house kitchen where we finally finished the shiplap after 2 years, geez! The whole back of the house here is kitchen, back porch and laundry and wanted to find the same color for all three rooms across the back here. Whole other story, just touching base with you.

OK great, you have to test in the actual space in that lighting and since it doesn't exist yet, don't buy any paint yet! haha!
