Since you are going to tear up the ceiling drywall, I'd take the opportunity to install several recessed lights along the hallway. I installed these Lightolier 3" 8W Round Recessed Mini Downlights whose beams are quite narrow but you could install other LED fixtures whose beams were wider (more floodlight-like). I'd recommend controlling with a dimmer (inexpensive example: EATON SI06P-W-K Core Skye).

@acm the house has a mid-century eclectic vibe. But I really like keeping it minimal for the hallway since it's so small.

Even though you're using dark hardware, I'd consider a white or nickel fixture, just so it sort of disappears. Using iron or bronze draws the attention in such a light space.
