Are there any suggestions for specific plants?

Since we have no idea where in the world you are, no :-) And there are literally dozens that will achieve a look similar to what Yardvaark has proposed in his mock up. A local garden center will carry plants properly suited to your location and climate and can suggest and help you select those that will offer a similar presentation and look.

My answer is same as Gardengal's. Take the picture to the local garden center and see what they say could make plants close to those shown. Or maybe someone from your part of Alabama will chime in with recommendations. (Do the same plants grow in all parts of Alabama?)

The brick wall is a beautiful feature. I’d like to see a climbing rose, vine with an open habit, or espaliered fruit tree on it. What is it’s expisure to the sun?

IMO, the front post should be beefed up and painted white and the downspouts painted in one of the colors of the brick. Downspouts aren't an attractive architectural feature to be highlighted.

You can have a climbing rose along that wall. Have other bushes along the wall and the rose in the middle.

It receives morning sun. How do you beef up the front post? I have bricks left over and thought about bricking it? Someone suggested to beck their if the way up and leave the post? I didn’t think that would follow the style of the home though?

Some inspiration with shrubs

To me the post doesn't look visually heavy enough to hold up the front porch. It probably doesn't but that isn't the point. It needs to look like it could. You could encase it with wider boards but I think putting brick around it would probably look best.

The post drives me nuts because I would have done a stained door and stained post but it was already done when we bought!
