IMO that lighting is to heavy looking for the space and I would choose solar shades for the window for heat and UV control and privacy in the daytime but the bonus is you get to keep the view and the add a colorful roman shade for night time if privacy is an issue.Take the stuff off the top of the cabinets

Agreed its just heavy and dated. (sorry). The wall color works and I think once you update the blind and the lighting it will feel much better in there. And yes no "filler" on the top of the cabinets would also help you.

Over the island, I would say you still need working light, so I would do one pendant with a downlight.

Can you post a picture that includes the dining table in there, and also what style would you say the whole house is?

Thank you so much! I will find a new fixture for above the island and appreciate the input on the shade. If the light above the table should also go please let me know. I didn't include a picture of the table because we are getting a new antique wood table and chairs. The style of the home is traditional/casual.

Yes, they both need to "hit the road jack" Do you have the size of the table, that will help us help you.

Thanks again:) The table will be oval and seats 6 (2 chairs on each side, and 1 on each end). I will post a pic of the adjoining family room. (The dining room off of the kitchen is being used as a study and is pretty bare).

These are the other pics, and a light that I liked...as you can see, the whole house needs help. Starting with the kitchen.

That one is a bit too tall. Measure what you have now and how far it hangs down so you can get idea of scale. then you can get something similar in the right size.

Whoever plunked only 2 recessed lights in your living room...goodness.
