LOVE your hideaway and especially love that chest and pic on the far wall. AND I am fine with no curtains/drapes in this room!!! I seem some nesting tables.....would THOSE work between the chairs? I am wondering about a rectangular ottoman in front of the couch/love seat. Comfy for feet, but could also have a nice tray at one end of it, too.

Your furniture is very traditional so be careful of the type of ottoman you add for a coffee table. In fact, I'd do something other than an ottoman that can have the tendency to look heavy.

Since you have traditional pieces the covered table seems in keeping with your style. Maybe do something a little updated like this burlap w/fringe.

This is a lovely room. At first glance it looks a bit dark. It could be lightened up with the use of a glass table opens up a room nicely & it can be metal or wood....like a soft cream wood or a light metal look.

For between 2 chairs, you can also consider nesting tables, which can be handily placed where required.

Looks like there is beige wall-to-wall carpet? You could consider a lively patterned throw rug in middle space. I don't always like that look; however I can see it working well with right rug under glass coffee table or just the nesting tables, pulled out as needed.

I see you have some nesting tables in the front of the picture, how would they look between the chairs?
Can you paint the coffee table a lighter color - similar to the chest maybe. Can you paint the nesting tables a lighter color. I'm for using what you have if possible.

Window covers just panels on end only would help so much. Don't need to go custom. Bed & bath has what you want. Add rod and hang. go a color 2 shades darker than walls, solid. I would go big round 24" tufted fabric ottoman. A print light colors, take wall color, sofa color for print. Put a round open cherry wood table in center of chairs.

Move stack tables by sofa. Add a long and wide pic where they were. Base color for ottoman cream.

Let's think outside the oval;)

On window extend rod out from top of window 4" add a much taller lamp to your chairs table.

and, I think this room needs just a touch of whimsy, so let's toss the skirted one and beat to a different drum;)

Thanks, everyone! I wasn't very clear in that I want something to put my feet up on comfortably when I sit in there to read. I love the idea of a glass table, but that would be even less functional than what I have, unless there are other options? I wouldn't choose this furniture again today if I were starting over, but it has never been used until lately and I can't afford to replace it, so I'm trying to just go with it. I love the idea of whimsy and lightening the feel of the room!!

OK - I can work with that... How about a couple of cubes for the ottoman- feet happy and a bit of color as well;)

Sometimes as designer we can't help ourselves just have to give advice on whole room. Sorry. A ottoman big tufted is way to go. I did comment on that above.

I agree with Leelee, the lighter glass coffee table would add elegance and sparkle open up the room a bit. You could still have 'ottoman', square ones to move around the space!.. the best of both worlds then!... have fun!..

It appears you don't have enough space for a large rectangular ottoman so I think a couple of cubes or round ottomans to put in front of the chairs. It looks like the room is very neutral, but if there's a brighter color that can be pulled out of the picture of furniture use that in accessories. Options of things you could change out with something more colorful & whimsical: lampshades, pillows, clock, small items on tables, rugs, ottomans, throws. I agree with getting rid of the skirted table, but if you really want to keep it put a new skirt on it with a fun print. I think you could mix in a damask print with the traditional furniture and it would match but add some fun to it. Maybe some embroidered throw pillows as well. Ideas for colors to add-rust, mustard, lime, black, or navy depending on what would blend. Here's an idea for the print of a rug, although NOT in pink! I just happened to have this pic saved for my daughter's room. It looks like this is an adult area, but you still don't want sharp corners and glass for when the kids run into the room to see you.

Laurie - I took a look at your idea books and you do gravitate towards traditional and tone on tone decorating. The skirted table in itself is not a problem, but what I do see is a lot of very heavy furniture all together and that may be bothering you. Personally, the room is off balance as a result. I.e. you armchairs are skirted, your round table is skirted, the chunky painted credenza in the back of the room is sitting on a heavy base, even your coffee table seems substantial due to its heavily carved legs. This is 2/3 of your room all on one side. And opposite you have a (camelback ?) sofa raised on legs. Ideally, we should balance it a little.

I'd remove the skirted table and maybe bring it to right of the sofa as a side table. Then move the tree to the other side of the credenza. Move the nesting tables between the two armchairs. For now they will offer that look on legs to balance the legs of the sofa.

I want to suggest updating your color palette and add peacock and white gold or silver to your room, like the inspiration picture below. I think it would marry well with your current upholstery.

Now for accessorizing, remove the painting below the three windows. Instead, put a trio of big candles or a pair of hurricane glasses with pillar candles inside. Add a couple of peacock blue accents and a few silver framed pictures. same for the coffee table and the side tables. Look for boxes, bowls, vases, etc, in teal and peacocking and mercury glass and silver. A mirror like the one in the inspiration picture could be pretty above your sofa. Find a couple of mercury glass table lamps and put one on each of the accent tables. Perhaps get a new skirt for your table in these colors or something coordinating with your new toss pillows.
