I think you need a rug with color. I would pull the sectional away from the wall for breathing room.

I wouldn't use drapes on those windows since they fall completely behind the sectional. It makes it seem cramped. Just use the blinds alone. Put some large pieces of artwork on the back wall so you have a focal point and some color in the room. A new light fixture would look great. I like your coffee table, and the blue suggestions from celerygirl.

Can't tell from the photos...are both the walls & sectional gray? And the wall opposite the sectional...is that a console with a wall mounted TV? I agree the sectional dominates the room. I also would like to see the couch pushed away from the wall but it looks like you have little room with the TV/console there. With the dark couch & dark floors, you need a bright colorful rug, perhaps in multi colors. Ditch ANY clock. No curtains at all, just use the blinds. If you insist on curtains, hang them correctly as per celerygirl's suggestions. Clear off that console of those little knick-knacks. Replace the fan with a more modern & airy light fixture. So many colors look great with grays...blues, yellows, corals. Pick out a color from the bright rug you buy & choose pillow colors & art work for the wall. Coffee table is great...open & airy looking.

Do keep the blinds.

Use a swag valance for each window -- a full width top that will cover the top of the blinds and with sides that are hung to cover only the side window frame (leavin g as much of the glass visible as possible) and have the length of the swag stop just at or above the back of the sofa.

Yes walls are Benjamin Moore smoke embers grey and couch is Macy’s Radley Sectional mocha grey. We pulled the couch about 10” from the wall but it has an angled back so top of the couch is about 6” away from the wall. Could move up a bit but not a ton.

Lower the TV, center the end of the sofa on that wall and place the floor lamp in the corner behind it, left of the windows. Raise new drapes, and get a large rug.

I know y’all said add color and larger rug, but while I search for that, I already had this option to try. What do you think of this style/color in a larger size perhaps? Would add color with pillows/artwork to brighten things up.

The rug gives you more contrast and pattern, but not color. Instead, look for a color to add. With your grays it can be almost anything - blue, green, red, gold, pink, etc. Color is the only thing that will "brighten it up "

Biggest issue is sofa against the wall- pull it out at least 1 foot. Simple change, makes a huge difference.

Your pic does not show whole room but the couch would definitely feel better in the room if it was further from windows....if there is room try removing the one armless section ...the sectional can be pulled out further.....the removed section can be angled on the tv wall ..possibly?

Personally i like the smaller rug..it visually makes the sectional look smaller to match the size of the room better

What does the 4th wall in your room look like? Is it possible to rearrange things? Give it a quarter turn so that it is no longer in front of the windows. In other words, one section on the back wall and the other section would be where the TV / console currently set. The TV could then be on that (unseen) 4th wall. I also think the TV is mounted too high.

i think the couch is very big and dark, but i’m guessing you keep it, so i would get a big rug and none sheer curtains to balance the sofa. curr currently you have a small rug and sheer curatins and that is to light and airy next to sofa.

also, keep a bit space between the windows and the sofa!

I think a much larger area rug would be gorgeous. Large enough to fit the front end legs. Maybe 10x14

Are these still relevant today? Five years is an awful long time to worry about any one trend. I think putting a sofa in front of a window is never a good thing. Covering your light source, view of the outside. Bad juju.
