Why not do some bottom up shades

Agree with both...see if you can get cafe curtain rod that would fit just below the stained glass and inside the window trim. So pretty!

What a gorgeous rental! I was also going to suggest spring rods mounted just under the stained glass but jck910 beat me to it. Light linen curtain panels (twice the width of the window is typical) would be enough to provide privacy without blocking too much light. Fabric stores sell a hemming tape if you're not handy with a sewing machine.

This style looks pretty and fresh, and because the rod is mounted with rings rather than a spring rod, you can easily open and close the curtains.

I was going to say exactly what everyone else has said. That is sort f a classic look with those style windows. The picture by Open House is perfect.

Is there room for inside mount tho? Doesn't look it, but sometimes hard to tell from a pic.

Then the window in the first pic, there's no where to outside mount.

Thanks for all the feedback! I thought about an inside mount but these windows are massive and I don't think it will look right to have that half curtain option. The example photo is a small kitchen window and I think it looks cute there, but these windows are almost 5 feet wide. I'd like the living room to look elegant while still giving us privacy.

Top-down shades are probably what I would consider if I owned but they are out of my price range for a rental.

Edited to add: the inside frame is only 1" wide so I think an inside curtain would be pretty tight anyway.

I'm open to skipping a treatment on the foyer window potentially. I hadn't thought of that before as I thought it might look strange to have that window bare.

Shades mounted below the glorious stained glass is the way to go!.

It all depends on how much privacy you'd like.

Would you consider adding privacy film to the clear glass? If you weren't renting, I would suggest draperies for privacy.

I do not see a problem in scale with hanging curtains on an inside mount spring rod just below the transom. I like the light weight and sheerness of linen, batiste or voile that would let the light filter in and not detract from the stained glass.

I found spring rods with a small diameter at Bed, Bath, and Beyond last year.

I’m really surprised the landlord doesn’t put something up. We looked at renting a 100 yr old house a couple of years ago ... there were beautiful custom curtains at every window (very tall, antique wavy glass windows), as well as wood blinds.

I’m curious what previous renters have done in your house. Have you asked the landlord about it? Ideas they may have, if they’ll pitch in financially, etc?

If you don’t plan on opening/closing curtains a lot, consider using Command curtain rods...

Cafe curtains are the answer. You can also hang them on inside mounted rods so you don't damage the woodwork.
