why didnt you just leave them where they were .... perhaps you fixed something that wasnt broken ...

but im sure you had a heck of a time.. lol ... spring fever and all ...

i would suggest you put them in the coldest protected place you have ... and let the cold slow them down ..

maybe if the plants in the shed are still dormant.. put them outside ... it is march ... and put these in the shed .. that way they will be protected form direct frost or freeze

Your pips are a lot larger than mine are, but then, my hostas are of the mini/small/small medium varieties.

I know what you mean about repotting. I just repotted several of my indoor plants. Fortunately, I had stocked up on pots (which are costly!) during some local sales, so I was in good shape. Now I'm outta succulent potting soil and must restock.

My husband had came in and said "you're not going to like this" and told me about finding those hostas. As happy as I am that they are alive, I really didn't want to see them yet!

I couldn't really leave them there because they are double stacked so all of them had to be checked for growth. Then because of the amount of growth already (2 to 3 inches for some), I thought they NEEDED to get some light.

The weather has been up and down. Tomorrow the high will be around 38F. Then on Friday we will be in the 50's!

We've had rain off and on too. I worry about the pots that are buried in the ground. I have now and then placed a tarp over the area to protect from too much saturation. I really feel it would be better if I pulled them out.

Esther, my tropicals are crying out for some repotting! I am not sure if I have enough supplies. With COVID-19 I don't want to venture out for anything I don't have to get. It would be a great job to do while we are trying to stay isolated as much as possible. I hope to get a least a few done before running out of media.

P.S. I think your husband's car is a terrific location. I can't imagine why he would think otherwise. Ha!

newhostalady..your pips are beautiful..I have pips on Praying Hands in my tall black pots sitting in my garage..they're pale and tiny..I watered them..I haven't checked my shed pots..my 2 Blue Mouse Ears in very small pots were in a box in the garage..one pot has a single pip, nothing on the other..I watered these too..this limb came down in last night's storm..we were lucky..a little plant damage but it didn't hit the house..this is exactly how it landed..we'll work on it tomorrow..

popmama..my potted cannas and some of my elephant ears are in my entryway..I thought it was dark and cool enough to keep them dormant..wrong..they're leggy and growing..the pots are so big I'm not sure how to take them in and out..🤔

Love your canna trolly popmama! That was a very smart thing to make! I wasn't aware that canna's could be overwintered in the garage. I thought that was too cold. They are sun lovers too, aren't they?

Popmama, I feel like my neighbors must think I am crazy. They must wonder how I can spend so much time in the front garden (which is getting bigger) and wonder how I could possibly be taking pictures (again) of plants! I think you are very dedicated to your canna's and I understand perfectly your moving them in and out of the garage!

Nicholsworth, I just noticed Hush Puppie beginning to sprout in my garage. (I had a talking to it. I said "what are you thinking!!!! It's freezing outside! Stop growing!" In regards to your hosta that are showing signs of life, I would hold back on watering unless you know for sure they are dry. Some of mine have several inches of growth, and I have not watered any one of them!

Nicholsworth, that is quite a limb that fell. I am glad you had minimal damage.

Nicholsworth, I don't know what to say about your canna and elephant ears showing life. My mother-in-law used to say "where there is a will, there is a way." I really didn't like her saying it at the time. I am sure you will find a way to deal with your plants. My elephant ears were bare rooted. I hope they are not awake as yet. I had better go and check . . .

newhostalady..my pips are not as pretty as yours!..I didn't clean up much when I put these away for the winter..you can see last year's leaves on 3 of 4 pots haha..last week I picked the leaves off of one of the Praying Hands..these pots were very dry..I gave them just a little water..

we were outside for 3 hours today working on our fallen limb..I enjoyed it 😁..we cut off small branches that we can chip..then we had to saw the thicker pieces short enough to fit in the trash can..my husband didn't love it but I saved 4 long "character" logs..for now they won't fit in the can anyway ..we still have a small pile to finish..

I'm still thinking about the tropicals..my husband has a standing work light..it's pretty bright..it puts out a lot of heat..maybe use it during the day not too close to the plants?..are all of us a little crazy? Lol..

Nicholsworth, I have plenty of pots that are not looking pretty! I'll be going out soon and will take a few pictures.

Glad you enjoyed yourself outdoors. That made the task so much easier. Always nice to have a sense of accomplishment!

Regarding the standing work light----won't hurt to try it. I knew you would come up with something!

Saturday was a beautiful day. My daughter and I went for a walk. Today it was so cold and windy! Couldn't do much outside.

I took my pots out of the shed..they have pips..Autumn Frost has 2 fat white pips and 2 tiny greenish ones that barely show..after I cleaned up the pot I found the tiny ones when I smoothed the dirt..hard to tell in the pic but Regal Splendor is in a fairly large pot..when I was cleaning I turned the pot and a bat flew out!..the pot was in a black garbage bag..my husband carried the bag to the sidewalk..then he lifted the pot while I slipped the bag off..neither one of us saw the bat..we've had bats in the shed before..he looked around for them as we moved the pots out and says "good no bats"..it startled me for just a sec then I thought "oh it's a bat"..I didn't even scream..

Ann, a bat in the hosta pots! You have so many different animals in your garden:-)

newhostalady, every year comes withanother surprise by Mother Nature :-) I know people that have hosta in their living room this year because the came out early and then it got really cold again...

Pips are coming slow this year, our winter has been wet and warm and end of March came a freezing cold and the soil in the pots was frozen. From this weekend the nights should be above zero and I hope that life comes back quickly. With the Corona lockdown there is not much we can do, but I would love to be outside as long as possible.

My pots are clean now and I*m checking for pips every day...

The first to show up this year was the beautiful Ivory Coast I got from Dave last summer and I had to cover it with soil more than once.

Pots? I put my potted hostas in the garage in the fall, removing the leaves from them before I do this. I don't think about them all winter. Then in the spring, before the pips start to show, I take them out and settle them somewhere temporarily, until they come up and I can see who they are. I drag the hoses out of the garage and give them a good watering. That's about it. I use a dolly and a garden cart to move them around. Empty pots only now, not very impressive yet.

More pots. These are labelled with cut off plastic mini-blinds with pencilled in IDs. Pencil doesn't fade with time, while marker does. The miniblinds are immortal. Some of those little labels say NOID.

Nothing is impressive yet. It's 45 degrees outside and cloudy. It's been colder and raining for three days. It's spring, but not warm and sunny enough to get things growing fast yet. Boston area, technically zone 6.
