I love my Dyson. It’s my second one. I’d still have my first one if a flooring guy hadn’t dropped and broke it. I’ve had my second for about six or seven years now and it’s going strong. Does great with dog hair and on all surfaces.

We got a Dyson right when they came out with the purple pet hair model. It's been 10 years I'd guess. It works fine. Which reminds me, I need to give it a good cleaning.

It depends what you're used to. My wife bought a Shark and I hate it - it's an expensive, lightweight piece of junk that has to be constantly emptied and gets clogged with pet fur. I had a very average Hoover canister vac that outperformed the Shark for most tasks, but she was used to an upright and that's all we could have. You can't even stand the Shark up and the cord doesn't retract.

Sharks work really well and when they break at least your not out hundreds. I’m on my third that I use on area rugs, tile and carpeted stairs. I clean it regularly and empty it every use. They do fall over easily, but so do my Eureka and small Bissell.

In addition to shark and dyson, there are also some other famous brands of vacuum cleaners, such as moosoo, aposen, tocmoc, irobot and so on. The most cost-effective is moosoo, the most famous is irobot. Of course, all of them can be used more than 5 years as long as you use it correctly.

I love my Dyson cordless but its brushroll (and the upright versions) can be too aggressive for very delicate area rugs. We have a Miele canister at our beach house that sounds similar to your set up in terms of a lot of hardwood flooring with just a few rooms of rugs/carpeting. Absolutely love the Miele and it will last forever. Personally, I'd rather pay extra $$$ up front to just be done with it and know I'll have a solid machine for years to come .

I had a Miele canister for 15 years and just replaced it with another Miele. Excellent cleaning, build quality, filtration, and very quiet. They're built to last and generally worth the extra money.

I have a Miele S7/U1 upright. I absolutely love it. It is a very versatile machine. I do find that other machines have slightly better agitation, but our brushes are fairly dirty though, so they aren't like new. I will tell you though, I do really like the agitation of Shark machines, but I do not care for the bagless design and the poor build quality. Dysons are the same way, but I would much rather buy a Shark. I did my own little test to see how effective the Sharks agitation was buy first running a Kirby on the carpet, then running over the same flooring once again with the Shark. There was very little debris that the Shark picked up. Just proving how effective Kirby's suction is.

Our Miele has only clogged twice. One was a pencil and the other was a small piece of wood trim. Eventually dirt, hair, and other debris clogged around the items and reduced suction. It took 1 minute to resolve it each time. Also, I don't have any filters to clean, and when the bag is full, it self seals and no dust is let out anywhere. A box of bags and filters lasts us a year, and through Bed Bath and Beyond is $15.

agree Miehle Dog and Cat classic 1; works great on carpeting, tile, laminate. The accessories that come with the model make it very effective for overall cleaning, I have had mine for 3 years- very frequent use, pet hair, no problems.

I replied here 3 years ago about my Dyson. It recently broke in an unfixable way. I looked around and bought a Shark APEX with the dual rollers. It is SO much better than the Dyson. I went over a carpet that had been vacuumed by the Dyson and picked up more gunk. I went over the same carpet 3 more times and got more and more dog hair and stuff I never knew about. After that it seemed to come clean. The carpet looks much better than after using the Dyson.

I also have the Shark Apex vacuum and love it, it is outstanding. I have had it a couple of years. It has fabulous reviews. I recently purchased a Shark air purifier, as I have seasonal allergies to tree pollen, it also has rave reviews, works great.
