Did you happen to take any photos? It would definitely seem to a later bearing variety (or one which holds fruit on the tree very well).

We are in coastal california and have had a pretty mild winter. I think it just held on the tree unnoticed. I didn't think to take a picture of the fruit, but this is what the tree looks like now. It is very healthy, just hasn't previously given us fruit.
