advice on rug size?

So attached are two pics of our family room, with tape measures on the floor showing two different rug sizes. This will be the first time I’ve had to pick a large area rug, so I’m a total newbie in this, and I keep reading bigger is better.

The room itself can handle a 10x14, but we do have the door to the screen porch, and I wonder if I should do a 9x12 and offset it slightly to keep that walking path more accessible. We wouldn’t do furniture all the way over, regardless, to have room to walk.

So, bigger rug to make room look bigger, or smaller rug to avoid having to walk half on/half off to get to porch?
