bathroom makeover

I am renovating the kids bathroom. Marble surround for white tub/shower, black floor, white double vanity with marble top and brushed nickel handles. Will have two black round mirrors and two black vanity lights.
My questions:

  • my bath fixtures are chrome, should the faucet match chrome or brushed nickel handles... ??
  • for towel hooks etc... black, chrome, or brushed nickel (if that what is recommended for the faucets)??

Certainly appreciate any feedback and guidance!

    Hi loobab
I completely agree but unfortunately it came with the vanity (good deal). I almost didn’t buy it but as of September, both with be away at univ and so I’m hoping they’ll be careful and hopefully responsible enough.

I’m researching to see if I can seal it to protect it - I should have clarified, marble is only on vanity, inside shower/tub is porcelain tile that looks like marble

Marble and your other high maintenance choices are totally unsuited to a children’s bath. Rethink this.

Hi - this is great feedback, will re-think a few things...mights have to stay the course since some of the wheels are in motion. Kids are grown(ish) and 18/20 so it is more of a guest bath.... guess the next family may have to content with it when I downsize in 5-7 yrs. LOL

You seem to have a lot of experience, what do you recommend for faucet finishing (chrome or brushed nickel) and hooks/tp holder colors, etc?

That’s jewelry. Forget that entirely until you have a more functional basic design. You’re making the same mistake that everyone does. You’re equating “design” with pretty choices. That’s decorating, not design.

Design is the functional aspect of the space planning and material choices. Like the fact that a black floor will never look clean and will always have TP lint and bare footprints on it. Like fake marble and real marble together show off the worst aspect of each, not the best. Like double sinks are far less useful than the lost storage that happens with that choice.

Like the fact that you haven’t once mentioned choosing an appropriately licensed and insured contractor with actual skills who understands correct waterproofing. And like the biggest red flag that exists is non licensure and a “bargain” price that’s well outside the standard mid grade hall bath remodel of 20K.

    Hi Michelle-

Your children are just about adults, so we can hope they can keep tidy.

    Are they male or female?

    Here's a question for you.

Now that they are older, will they want to share a bathroom as they get ready to go out?

Many people think they should have double sinks in a bathroom, but how many people really want to share a bathroom as they get ready , especially as they get older?

I do not care for towel hooks, I don't think that the towels dry out adequately.

There are some really beautiful double and even triple towel rods you can purchase, and you can get two of them, or even three. If the bath/shower area is large enough one inside there and two outside, and even a smaller one for hand/face towels near the sink.

If storage is an issue you can get a rack like they have in hotels in which to store many folded towels.

As to the type of hardware, it is totally your choice.

A black floor is very dramatic and will look beautiful for sure, but it will show every drop of lint from the towels and bathrobes and powder and cosmetics.

If the bathroom will be used for guests in the future, you may have parents with children using it, so all the more reason to have easy maintenance surfaces.

Fixtures that don't show fingerprints might be a good choice.

Thank you both - I opted to replace what was already there and my daughter requested her own sink as she wasn’t keen on sharing with her brother. Will rethink what is functional design- appreciate the input.
My contractor is highly qualified and teaches construction as well as construction educators so is very conscientious of codes and waterproofing. The vanity was the good price point. Look forward to visiting the posts
