Can you take out just the two tall side units? Is the floor and walls finished under this unit? If not, just add more shelves on the two tall units and maybe a false back and use it for books or something like that. Are you planning on short curtains on the windows? I can see two pretty pots of live plants in front of the windows and something tall and decorative in the center part. Do agree that taking it all out would be best if floor and walls are finished.

Rip it out it totally destroys the window design

If you are a renter i would be sure to have any structural changes approved

If you are the owner i ,too would remove them to open more floor space and appreciate the nice windows

Are they missing the doors? What an eye sore. I would remove them and not look back. They serve no purpose and aren't an architectural feature. They are just taking away from your usable square footage in the room.
