Remove the weeds, the pot, the metal thing, the edging and the random bits of paving stone, delineate the space with a simple crisp cut edge and stick a single low growing sub shrub in it.

Annuals require refreshing every season. How about Mexican heather?

Love Mexican heather, and I have some that I could possibly transplant. How many plants would you estimate?

It is a small space. I would use one type of plant. Not enough room for variety.

How about Clivia?

I agree with Floral re ripping everything out. Though, I would consider planting bulbs for spring, and then choosing an annual to enjoy each year. Impatiens or begonias could be good bloomers, or coleus for colorful foliage.

I'm realizing a trip to the nursery just isn't in the cards for awhile, so I need to "shop" my yard. This is what I have that can be transplanted:

Meerlo lavender - 3 smallish plants

Mexican Heather - 1

Cannas - yellow and red (both tall varieties); orange and salmon (shortish - 3 feet)

flax lily - a clump

Phormium (small variety) - 1

daylily (Everyday Pink) - a bunch

agapanthus - a bunch

geranium (red) - 1

liriope

I have a very similar area about 1x5 feet deep/wide with sun 6am to 11am and your same zone.

For now I put in violas. Got them at Lowes.

In the fall if I can find them might try penstemon heterophyllus Margarita BOP.

It will want more sun, but should be fine.

I wouldn't put cannas or anything that drinks water so close to your foundation.

I am not getting any visual ideas, except 1) since you’ve got a window there, I’d keep the gardenia and maybe even add jasmine, so the scents can waft in and 2) I like the height aspect you have going, so maybe put the jasmine on a trellis? Or a climbing rose.

It depends on how much light you like though. To me, there isn’t much better than light getting filtered by plants.
