Thanks for the quick response! Yes, we did try that but then we‘re too close to the kitchen island / counter with the bar stools.

Do you require all 6 chairs at the dining table? If not, shift the table perpendicular to the radiator, under the light fixture, remove the chairs at each end of the table, leaving just 2 chairs on each long side of the table. Also remove the 2 chairs at the kitchen counter which just add clutter.

I have a couple of questions to see what the best option for you would be. Looking at the space I think you have more room than what you think you do. What size table table do you currently have? How much space is there between the kitchen counter and the radiator cover? Also how many people are you wanting to seat at the table, all 6?

As Barbara said, we currently don‘t need all 6 chairs. That‘s why I removed the chairs at the end of the table and centered it a little bit more under the light fixture (see picture).
Carolyn, the current table is 160cm x 90cm. The space between kitchen counter and radiator cover is 77cm.
At the table, 4 people must have a seat. 2 additional are optional.

Maybe it would help if I place the big wall art more to the left, to also center it with the table..

There is no way with only 77cm between the two for much else but that barstools. I actually think some in a small round/square with a leaf to expand would be a good option for you. And you could get closer to centering it. Something that is a 42" (107cm) if you have a size like that available. Both light fixtures are placed kind of wonkily in the space, and that one is casting a shadow of a bulb on the wall, plus they are throwing lots of glare. If you own this home, consider selecting a new table and chandelier at the same time and swagging the light over the table. I would replace the one in the living area with a semi-flush fixture. Improved lighting, including LED's in the 4-5K range will help your place immensely.

if you used some simple, backless stools at the countertop, it would give you a bit more space (visually) to bring in a larger table. Tuck them all the way under the overhang.

i vote to turn it 90 degrees, recenter and remove counter chairs.

Here is how a 90degree turn would look like... We are too close to the kitchen and are left with too much space between our table and the living room. We are now looking for a new dining table which doesn‘t look so heavy (maybe mid century). We‘ll try to center it more under the light and change the fixture to have a pendant light over the table. I hope to have a solution with this. Thanks again for all your feedback!

but why is the table against the wall? photo seems to show plenty of room.

If we place it more inside the room, it blocks the passage to the kitchen...

Here's a round table would look. (I know the style doesn't work w/your decor, it's just so you can see the proportion) And round tables come w/leafs, so when not in use, you can make it smaller.

and glass will always give the illusion of more space.

Wow, thanks a lot. I love the third composition that you did. fits perfectly to the rest of the space. And although glass would indeed lighten the situation, we have two small children and not quite ready for breakable material :) The chairs and the legs of the table are something I‘ll look for in a new set!

Hi everybody! Thanks again for all the ideas and the help. After a few weeks of trying out different things, we‘re now more or less done with the dining area. Your thoughts on it (round table, light fixture etc) helped in getting some symmetry in there. I appreciate it!
