Replacing Kitchen Laminate/Rolled Backsplash

Hi everyone,

New member and first post for me. So I purchased this house and it has rolled-up laminate that extends towards/as the backsplash for the kitchen.

So I'm wanting to replace the laminate countertop/backsplash with new laminate/different laminate design, but I'm not really sure how to approach it. My biggest dilemma is it appears that there are not many kitchens with extended laminate backsplash such as mine, and therefore a lack of examples to follow. Additionally, it seems like there are 2 ways to approach this: 1) get rid of old laminate and apply new one OR 2) sand down old laminate and apply new one on top of old

Wanting to replace the countertop/backsplash laminate with a new one, and then sand/repaint all the cabinets & replace the hardware (but that's for another thread :) ).

Start ordering samples of Formica. In a couple of months, call a kitchen and bath showroom to make an appointment. They’ll handle it.

You can order free laminate samples from both Formica and Wilsonart directly on their websites. Shipping is free too. Also, you don't have to, unless you want to, use laminate for the backsplash. You can go with laminate counters and then tile the backsplash.

When replacing the counters, the existing tops would be completely removed. The laminate would be applied to a new substrate, most likely particle board and then installed.

Your kitchen looks small enough that if you have the countertops fabricated locally, you won't have the corner seams. You also could order premade counters and install them yourself but you'd have the corner seams (like in the photo above).

Undermount sinks (although these get very pricey) are an option. You also have multiple options for edges that eliminate the tell tale black line that your counter has. Here are a few:
