Kitchen Design Dilemma

Hello, I recently bought this home and I'd like to eliminate the dining area and make this open space a living area and large kitchen (extending into the former dining room). The new kitchen would include a large island with 6 or more seats, to serve as a dining table.

Since the doorway would break the run of cabinets, I worry about the design not looking cohesive. On the dining room side, I could only use the back wall for cabinets, as there's a window to the left wall, as you're looking into the dining room.

Can I make this work? I'm also including a photo of my dream kitchen, which really has nothing to do with my design dilemma!

I appreciate any advice you can offer! Thanks!

Michelle

I would need a to scale floor plan for sure but I can see some real issues with doing what you want . I think the doorway is going to make the kitchen a walk through all the time . I need the entire floor plan for the LR DR and kitchen . All windows and door ways marke all measurements clearly marker and if the plumbing cannot be changed that needs to be amrked along with gas lines . Have you thought of making the kitchen larger toward the glass doors and the using what appers to be the LR into the DR and using the DR for the LR. At first glance that would come closer to your dream .

Can you fit an island which would be 9.5' x 4' (typo changed from 7.5 to 9.5) on what is now the DR side? Because I'm thinking that the seating island needs to be on one side or the other--not blocking the entry from the hall. Will this be your only seating for dining? Rough idea, with no structural changes:

Or, separate zones on each side of kitchen/one island:
Seating on three sides of the island/no pantry:
    One more, with 4 x 7 island:

I love these ideas, thank you! If there was a way to have an equal-sized island on each side of the door, I think that would give it nice balance. But you've shown me that it can be done. If you think of any other designs, please don't hesitate to share! Thanks again!

Is this your only dining area? You likely do damage to your resale value if you eliminate the only dining area and leave only island seating.

Yes, it's the only dining area. But I'm willing to make that concession rather than having a dining table that we would rarely use. It's just the two of us.

I would never have the only dining area an island. Many people find sitting at such very uncomfortable. A table is far more versatile.

Okay, rather than an island, is there a way to expand the kitchen into the dining room (making it a large kitchen) with an eat-in table? Thanks for your ideas.

You’re ruining the house and tanking the value with any of that. Island seating is uncomfortable for meals. People need at least one comfortable sit down table height spot to linger over a meal. With other people invited into your home. Not to perch hunched over a too tall counter wolfing down a TV dinner. The kitchen needs to stay in the kitchen. It’s perfectly functional as it is. You’d need a house twice as big as yours to have the big out of proportion kitchen that you want to put in this modest little house. Start saving your pennies for that giant house. And leave this one alone. It’s cute as is, for what it is.

Our house is similar in a way, tho ours isn't totally open between the three areas. We have an eat-in kitchen, and the table is in front of the patio doors. I know you have a fireplace over that way, and we don't..but I'm sure there's a way to make yours work w/a table/chairs rather than an island for seating. Sometimes walk ways, walls, and such aren't in the best spots and short of big work there's nothing to do about it, so we just do the best we can w/it for changes.

Yes, I suppose the window could be expanded. Would you mind posting the link to nightowl's kitchen? Thank you.
