Help...Dining room what’s missing

last modified: 5 years ago

This is my dining room. I was wondering if I should paint the wall or put wall paper on the wall where the clock is. I think I need to add colour or should I put a big piece of colourful artwork instead of the clock. What do you see wrong with this room

Remove the clock and add a piece of art.

I would remove the clock and do art. I also would dress the windows with panels at each side. Are yo able to do something other than a vertical blind? I would remove the items places in the corners. They are not doing anything for the space.

    You all inspired me. I

moved a picture from my bedroom to the dining room. I love it. Do you think it’s too high? Is the plant ok there and the metal candle holder where should I put it. Or get rid of it. I am so excited. I think it has elevated the room so

    Much. So exciting .

I actually do like the painting. Gives the room some life even though it doesn’t have a lot of color to it. It provides some depth. Good start!

I would consider a different picture with more color, and something calmer than two bucks fighting, especially in a dining room. A plant will also add life and warmth to your space.

I quite like that image there. Is strikes me as a modern, whimsical play on a veddy, veddy formal dining room...you know the sort of room that has plenty of red, various fussy furbelows, and an oil of a dead pheasant to accompany the noble stags. Well done!

Gosh that art piece must be like a Rorschach Test. I didn't see the stags until Ingrid mentioned them LOL! I thought it was just a modern piece. I quite like the black and white in the space. Based on your pictures it is in line with all the other monochromatic elements of your home. I would still add drapery panels. I would try for something a bit longer and slighting taller in the table.

Lol. I am looking into drapery panels. Will keep you posted. Our home is quite modern so I don’t want it too busy I agree with the table piece needing height. Do you think the picture is at the right level or needs to be lowered? Thanks for your help !

    Very nice so far.

Linen like panels that just touch the ground could be nice

I am shocked at myself. I thought color was needed, but not after you put the stag picture there. It is perfect IMO. Don't change a thing. And, actually, I would not add panels, which I am usually for. The vertical blinds seem to go so well with the modern theme and the vertical lines in the stag picture. And, the picture appears to hung exactly right.

The only thing that I might even consider adding to your room is a BIG live green plant in the corner. A jolt of bright green, nature...etc. Fabulous room!

I really think the art looks fine. Here is the thing I am not standing in the room. Picture angles are always subjective. I usually hang art so the bottom is right above the chair table like so

Some inspiration photos on art placement.

Have you considered adding a cool linear chandelier?

That’s a great idea. Thank you. I will talk to

    my husband about it

That’s pretty neat you can add that to

my room. My main floor is an open concept. The kitchen is right beside the dining room. I have these lights hanging over my island. Would you still suggest that type of chandelier over the table ?

    Gorgeous!

Try the plant you have on the floor on top of the table shown in your first pic (the table with the orchid on it). It might not be right for use as a plant stand with that plant, but I think getting it up off the floor would help fill that corner. If you like the look, but not with that table, maybe look for something else to put under the plant.

I’m not sure what you mean do you mean to put the orchid on the table? I moved that plant stand to a different spot and now have a real plant in that corner. Are you saying that plant isn’t tall enough?

I put the orchid on the table and moved the plant. I just wanted to see if a lamp would work there not sure what I think ....

I think a lamp could work, but it needs to be taller and not cast a shadow on the art.

Love the art and wouldn’t add drapes, so as to keep the clean lines. Since a chandelier is not dictating where table is placed, would the space allow for a narrow console or side board under artwork if you shifted the table down a bit. It will ground the wall and you can add a lamp for extra warmth and low lighting and save you big time instead of installing a chandelier. Bonus with piece is extra storage/serving surface and once accessorized, a more interesting space.

Honestly can't believe I am saying this, however, I see a chandelier spoiling the nice clean lines in your dining room. And, no to the lamp. And no to the orchid on the table. The clean lines are removed with the lamp and the orchid on the table to my eye.

I liked your plant in the corner. If you were to place it on a stand to be taller, you could place an up light behind it to light the corner from the floor up.
