I would start with some new bedding you love then that will drive the color of the walls and IMO those ceiling tiles need to be removed or at least covered with drywall not ship lap. Get rid of the cheap looking bookcase , paint the louvered doors the same as the walls, close up that little niche above the bed and IMO you need a headboard it can be hung on the wall no problem. The white night table is eally too small. You have to be careful about mirror placement in a bedroom and it should not be reflecting the bed IMO. The night stands should at least match in height and I prefer them to match in style.Use the quarter sawn oak for the night tables , forget the hunter green IMO bedrooms are nice when the colors are serene . The new bedding will drive the color of the walls so get that first before deciding colors. I also think bedrooms should be clutter free so no cubbies filled with stuff.

@njmomma I agree that we need to figure out some lighting. Currently the space has a dingy feel to it. Some of that is wall color, but lighting too. Thanks for pointing out that importance.

Thank you for the input. Yes, we are going to have the bed slightly inset from the wall. There is still some construction to do on that. I like the bedding set you linked to, and price wise it’s very nice. I would absolutely LOVE to do white bedding but we have 20ish pound cavapoo that insists on sleeping with us. Is there anything else you think that would be neutral and still hold up to occasionally dirty paws? Earth tones come to mind but I would prefer to stay either gray tones or maybe something patterned that doesn’t look to feminine.

@caldwell great information, it seems the bedding idea is a good place to start. I’ve gotten rid of the niche above the bed by opening up a space to recess the bed. I just moved the shelves downstairs that you didn’t like (I totally agree). Most of our stuff is random/hand me downs and we are just getting around to actually have thought behind our belongings :)
May I ask why you suggest no shiplap?

Looks like your going for a more Aztec Southwestern design bedroom.

What does your bed look like....headboard and frame?

The cutout for the bed leaves the placement of bedside tables in an awkward position. They ended up too far away from the head of the bed so you can't really reach items there very easily, and they just don't look right. It must be rather difficult too to reach back to put the fitted sheets on at the head of the bed. As an alternative, why don't you construct a knee wall along the length of that wall? You would still retain the extra floor space by having the bed pushed back and the entire look and function would be improved.

Those options are beautiful. They definitely set a tone for the room.

Kay, slow and steady... with an emphasis on slow.

We picked up some sheets from Coyuchi (wrinkled percale). Then today I managed to get the gumption to frame in the side walls and hang some drywall. :)

Next is build a custom low profile headboard, add a nice skirt to hide the ugly frame. Later will be reminiscing those ugly doors and adding built in shelving on hinges so I can still access the little storage nooks.

I love the idea of the knee high wall PRN. I will likely incorporate that! Thank you

Knee wall going up! I’m framing in supports for a couple double doors that will be hidden behind the bed so I don’t loose the little storage space. We are super tight on space here even as just a man and wife... so have to find every inch! :)

Mini update...

Looks good. The ledge gives the illusion of a headboard. I would think about painting from the ledge down in a different color and then the slanted wall and sidewalls the same color as the rest of the room.

I totally agree. I did the “headboard-y thing” out of some really nice sanded plywood so I’ll likely paint it white like the other furniture in the room. Maybe a earthy grey for the walls.
