Composting requires moisture and air flow. Stacked sod doesn't have much of either. It'll compost, but it will take a long time. If you wet the top of the pile regularly and let the water soak in, you might have compost in a year. Call it lasagne. If you seed the top with some source of nitrogen, like lawn fertilizer, it'll go faster.

I did that by accident once. I dug a garden and didn’t know what to do with the sod, so I put it in the woods. It broke down into a lovely dark mound of soil. Later, when I dug a new bed, I put the sod on the bottom of the dug row before replacing the soil.

i will try to get some moisture and fertilizer in there. i have pallets on the side to allow for airflow and a tarp over the top to keep in some heat. i do not plan to use until next spring.

Pallets and tarp are a good idea. Sounds like you're going to get what you want.

There won't be any heat. Rotting turf down is cold composting. There's no need for fertiliser either. All it needs is time and patience.

With nitrogen fertilizer, you need less patience! :) I'm skeptical about lack of heat. For biological degeneration there is always heat, and if you keep the pile insulated the degeneration will go faster. Certainly for a pile with little or no aeration, there won't be a lot of heat. It certainly won't be "hot" composting. But if you keep the pile completely cold, you'll certainly need patience.
