Snakeroot, Bugbane and Cimifuga

Hi GWebbers,

I've heard that Snakeroot, Bugbane and Cimifuga all are good plants to put in a very moisture-retentive soil. Can anyone who has experience growing these plants chime in with how well they grow? I've also heard they are very 'architectural' -- reaching 5'-6' heights. Love to hear from you. Cheers,

Snakeroot and bugbane are common names for the Cimicifuga that got moved to Actaea.

Anyway how very moist is this spot? What is the complete situation?

How "architectural" they are and how much moisture they will tolerate depends on the species. And there are quite a few :-)

This is on the edge of a pond in Zone 5, Metrowest MA. Can also plant away from the pond in soil not so moist.

You want to look at the Actaea simplex cultivars, particularly the ones in the Atropurpurea Group - 'Brunette', 'Hillside Black Beauty', 'Black Negligee', etc. Great dark purple foliage, tall (to 6' in flower) and with lovely, honey scented spikes of creamy white or slightly pink tinted flowers in late summer. Best in more sun than shade but with consistently moist soils.
