Something in the Solanaceae on the lines of Solanum xanthocarpum. Can you tell us the size of the fruit and whether the plant is thorny?

Yes, it has thorns.

The large ones were about 3 cms. in diameter.

It's hard to see the leaves or branches but if it's a bit shrubby how about Solanum linnaeanum.
