Color Matching From Drywall Sample

I'm having to touch up the walls with paint after some repairing. I tried color matching at Lowes (brought in a piece of our drywall paper) but the color always seems to come out too light. Is there anyway I can get this color match system to work or am I going to need to repaint all the walls a new color? Kicking myself now for not keeping the old paint can!🤦🏻‍♀️

Unfortunately, touch-ups are needed on multiple walls. So, there's nothing I can tell the paint personnel at the store to help make this a better match? I do remember the name of the paint color (Nimbus cloud..bought many years ago) but not sure if they could do much with that. I much rather not have to repaint the whole room if I can avoid it as the house will be going on the market soon. Thanks for the reply!

Don't expect color "matching" at Loews or any big box. They are point and shoot stores. . Go to a dedicated Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams with the drywall, be prepared to spend at least an hour. on a custom mix, dry it ON that drywall before you leave. It should be nearly invisible.......and you STILL will have to paint an entire wall : ) or the room in total if you're picky. Sorry.

@Rockin' Fine Finish I’m in N Fl...it was a Valspar color (which they no longer carry the paint chip in store) could they do something with that info..even if it’s an old color?

The formula for the old color should be in the Valspar data base for the paint store who CARRIES the Valspar brand.

The buyout of Valspar by Sherwin Williams was odd. I had a paint color that was in a line owned by Valspar and discontinued when SW bought Valspar out. I called the SW headquarters to see if they could provide me the formula so I could have it mixed at their store and they said no. They had cleared all the formula information out and it simply isn't available. The best they could do was have me take my sample to their store and have a color match done. Benjamin Moore had color formulas that they used to copy the color, but SW did not have them in their system.

Made no sense to me, but it was their answer.

Even if you had the original paint can you may not have a perfect match. Things, including our paint, fades, yellows, changes with time. 10 year old paint on your walls may not look the same as it did when it was applied.

We have also seen some changes to both pigments and bases that are regulatory changes (Lower VOC, environmental safety requirements) that can alter the appearance of some paints even if the exact same formula is mixed today vs 5 or 10 years ago.

If you can get a close enough match (and Jan is right, some of the BM and SW have really talented people mixing their paints and can get it really close) you will often still have differences in sheen, If your paint job is more than a couple of years old you are really better off painting the walls again. If you like the color and get a close color match this can easily be completed in a day.

“A couple of years” of light exposure, and the paint directly out of the old can won't match either. You should have primed the patch as well. Now, prime the patches, and paint all the walls.

Get a color match that is a s close as possible and as mentioned paint the wall very crefully in the corners so there is no overlap , and call it a day.

Prime the spots, and then paint the wall. I don't think there is any way around it ...
