Hey all! I could really use a pro-designer's eye on this one. I am about to cancel a big project I've had in the works for a couple years now { in my head } but now that I've set things in motion and have an idea what things will look like aesthetically, I'm not crazy about how this will turn out.

I want to turn the unfinished loft space of my salt box garage into a finished studio / office area. In order to do this, I need to put in a dormer or there just isn't enough room. What seemed like a no-brainer has now turned into a major aesthetic disappointment. I'm not really interested in anyone trying to change my mind about the look, but, rather, maybe offer some alternative ideas { if any } to make this look less weird - and, some design reinforcement from a pro who understands what I'm talking about here so I can explain to the contractor why this is breaking design rules.

I've seen many dormers that look great. Dormers that look like they belong; that are proportionate to the roof, etc., however, I remain unconvinced that my salt box garage will work aesthetically. Usually I'll see either a full dormer, or a dormer centered on the roof, etc. They can look really good.

Apparently, in order to afford the necessary space based on where the beam lands in the garage below, etc, I'll have to put the dormer super high-up near the roof, with hardly a slant on the roof, and, what I think is most aesthetically challenging, the dormer stops halfway down the roof so it ends up looking like this weird box / appendage jutting out near the top of the garage. I have scoured the internet looking for a salt box garage like mine with an effective dormer and none are to be found. { maybe because it shouldn't be done haha }

Based off of the dimensions in the existing dimensions in the loft space, I don't see any other alternative. It seems that this is the only way to do this, but again, I'm not a builder / designer - I just know what I don't like!

Any thoughts, advice, ideas, etc. would be greatly appreciated. There is just no way I am going to spend all this money on something that looks this weird / awkward.
