Kitchen redesign options - cabinet paint/wall color

Coming from someone with horrible style/matching I am looking for ideas for our kitchen. The countertops aren’t very old and neither is backsplash so plan to leave that. Would love to change cabinets tho (love white or off white but no idea if that would work here). Don’t really care to change tile either on floor so really it’s kitchen cabinets and wall paint color. Any suggestions for what would potentially work for this space? Kitchen also flows into our family room which we will be removing old carpet in and ideally want to go with vinyl plank flooring in family room. Any recommendations on color there would always be appreciated

Can you take some additional pictures so we can see all of the kitchen and the adjoining rooms? At first glance, the backsplash looks to have a lot of gray and the counter seems beige. Is that correct?

I don't think that the backsplash goes with your cabinets or counter. Your island looks nicely coordinated as the stone and wood look nice together. I'd remove the backsplash and leave your cabinets. If you are not ready to add new backsplash, for now you could just paint. Not sure what your adjoining spaces' coloring is, but a warm white, sage green or pale blue would nice. You could also change hardware to give it a different look

Additional photo. Family room also included that we’d love to replace carpet with some type of plank vinyl flooring

Well, it's going to be a challenge to get vinyl that matches all these finishes and can be a couple feet from real wood without looking super fake. But you can decide for yourself whether that's part of this project or for a later date.

I agree that the backsplash has to go -- it's very cool in a room where everything else is warm. Beyond that, if you're looking to paint your cabinets, you have a pretty wide range of options, based mostly on testing paint colors against your counters. I'd think a white would be ok, or a cream -- if you want to tie the room more to the other spaces, you could try to match the color of your interior doors or trim. You might consider keeping the island unpainted for some contrast and because the hickory is really very nice.

You might also consider a small wine rack for one of your LR cabinets, so that you can reclaim some of the usable counter space in the kitchen...

Your cabinets are actually very pretty and work well w/the counters. The odd man out is the backsplash. Just changing that will make a huge difference and be wayyyy cheaper than painting those wood cabinets. (hickory?)

the other thing I see is a bit of clutter on the countertops (the bottles) Can you make or buy a wine rack and use it for the bottles?

If you absolutely insist on painting those cabs, be prepared to spend in the 6K range for a professional job. if you don't, and go w/Joe house painter for 2500, he will ruin them and you'll have chipping paint in 6 months.

If you must paint something, then just do the island. In a color like Alabaster. Just the island. But still change your backsplash .

Actually, try changing the splash first. If you still feel like you want to paint, then just start w/the island. I think you'll see a big diff just in those two, but for sure the first, option

I'd spend the 1-2K and redo the splash. Something a bit more sedate. Like this Byzantine tile from Tilebar. It's a soft white done in a herringbone. You still get some interest, but it's a solid color so the pattern doesn't compete w/your countertop

    Another option

these are smaller bricks (Tilebar) but they are a soft creamy color that would look beautiful w/your cabs/countertops

you didn't post a straight on, non-crooked pic, so this is the best I could do

You could also go for contrast w/the darker shade in the countertop and then doing a soft white on your walls.

maybe a bronze shade glass tile?

    Not a Pro.

    It's a great kitchen.

I would only change your back splash. I would not paint those beautiful cabinets.

Thanks everyone!! I think we got the idea that backsplash is actually the problem and not the cabinets. So now looking at backsplash change and wall color change as it definitely needs a fresh coat of paint anyways. I tried to do a few more photos. It’s very cluttered right now but swear it’s not always this bad lol. Quarantine and two little ones have us well behind keeping things clean and organized

I think your current color works well. if you have to change it, maybe do a softer white. Or you could do a sage green or soft blue, depending upon your other decor items.

I posted some tile options. go to tilebar and look around. you can order 5 samples for $5.

here is that one softer white tile.

I just saw this white jade there

I mentioned a contrasting tile. I like this color

I kind of like these too

So here is a link to all of the cream/beige tiles on Tilebar in the size you would need.

(btw, if you guys can demo that current splash yourself, you'll save a bit more money. if budget isn't an option, then never mind!)

Beth thanks so much for the suggestions. Super helpful! Our wall color is currently yellow so we’d like to either change or just do a fresh coat as its at least 10 years old since it was painted. Is that what you meant regarding changing to a softer white or sage green or soft blue?

yes. a soft sage green would be pretty w/the creams in the kitchen and the wood cabs.

But you have blues in the other room? so maybe a very soft blue (not baby blue) would tie in w/that decor

    Smoke maybe?

BM Pale Oak is a nice shade

Ignore the almond color, but any of the others would also work

I'd order some tile samples. (have your friend order 5 too!) and see what looks best w/the cabs, tile, countertop and wall color. grab some paint samples too

I agree with the others that the backsplash is the real problem. Try to get a cream/off white that picks up the color in your granite. Beth has some great choices, but you may need to look at a bunch to get the correct shade for your granite. I don't love the yellow walls as it brings too much warmth to the space. Try a soft white for the walls, or go in a totally different direction with a soft blue or green perhaps picking up a color in the adjoining room.

Great. Thanks Beth and Design Girl. We will start getting some samples. The yellow we don’t love. Issue is it flows into front of home too so will be a big change we feel as not sure on transition. Same for family room we’d be willing to repaint as none of these rooms have been painted since we moved in 7 years ago. Carpet must be replaced but we were leaning towards plank vinyl flooring cause of little ones, dog, and pool. Here is family room and then our concern from kitchen into front of house

that's a lot of flooring. (I really hate vinyl. I think it's a downgrade). I understand you want something sturdy, and a good engineered wood would be just as good, yet keep the value and look to your home.

I would never, never do some cheap LVP that runs in the 3-4 dollar range. It won't last 20 years, it looks cheap and really won't add value. If you want to look into some thicker LVP that actually looks great (none of that busy looking patterns that repeat) you could do that. But again, those are also going to be in the $6 range and above.

Spend the money and do a hardwood, OR spend the money and look for a really, really good tile that looks like wood. that tile will also be in the $6 sq ft range. But otherwise you'll run into the same issue of it looking like fake wood.

Your current tile isn't that horrible, as it matches the house.

Along with the backsplash, please, please remove the wine bottles from atop the cabinets. Not only do they make the room look tacky, but that‘s perhaps the worst place to store wine. Heat rises, and near the ceiling is where it’s hottest. Wine should be kept in a cool, dry place.

Sorry. It would just be the vinyl plank where the carpet currently is in family room as well as our bedroom. Rest we’d leave as tile. Really just need some solution for the carpet as it’s so stained and beat up and professional cleanings just haven’t helped much last couple times. We’d rather not do carpet again in that room

ah, Ok. So you have no plans on ever taking out that tile? I ask, because I think if you did some nice engineered flooring, it would look great.

Even w/dogs, kids and a pool. obviously you just leave a towel and a mat by the back door to dry off sopping wet feet.

if you can find a really nice LVP, then have at it.

this one isn't bad. It's waterproof. Maxcore Uptown Chic

I just think this stuff is awful looking

Correct. Thanks and yea no plans on changing the tile out. It’s still in great condition and there’s just so much of it would be too costly and not worth it for us

and, is there any other place for your wine? what about space under the stairs that you could make into a mini wine storage? basement?

atop the cabinets are a horrible spot and just add to a cluttered look

heck, even something like this that you could put somewhere else would be an improvement

Thanks again. Wine normally isn’t there. We do have a wine fridge on other side of pantry in formal dining room but it broke a couple weeks ago so we got rid of it but have not replaced it yet

I think your cabinets are beautiful!

I agree with Beth that most LVP floors are just awful and fake looking. In addiiton, my fear is that LVP next to your lovely hickory cabinets will look fake and cheap. Have you ever thought of polypropylene carpet? It's really an indoor/outdoor carpeting but it doesn't look that way. EVERYTHING comes out, no staining ever, and it wears like iron. No problems coming in from the pool either as if it wasn't wall to wall it could be taken outside and hosed down. Couristan has some great looking ones, but there are many other brands. I've got it running up my stairs and down the hall and also in my family room. It's been wonderful with the kids and pets. I suggest you take a look before you go the LVP route.

Or maybe take a look at some of these wood look tile options? they have a ton of diff styles.
