new house woes - still unpacking boxes.

Furniture doesn’t fit my new home in more ways that one: (1) too traditional with fall colors and (2) seems way too small. I installed the Sputnik chandeliers so I’m not changing those and I’m leaning on painting the wall behind the sofa a rich blue - so the chandeliers won’t get lost. Beyond that, I’m lost like the chandeliers. My taste have changed but don’t have the budget to buy furniture. Any budget conscious suggestions?

I think the dining room can work although the sputnik chandelier contrasts completely with your dining furniture. In the dining room you could add a buffet, some plants and art. It looks empty because it isn't done.

In the living room it does look too small to me. I think you need a sofa not a love seat. Also the little desk/credenza you have on the wall near the living room also seems quite small. But again you need art, lamps, plants etc to add life to the space.

Not that it necessarily helps but we lived for four months with a taped square on the floor of our new living room while we searched for the perfect coffee table and the waited for it to come. We've now been in our home 1.5 years and just this week I bought three more plants as I still felt it needed more life.

Making a house a home doesn't happen overnight. It is a process.

I don't see any blue in the furniture of furnishings--so I don't think it it will work to paint the wall a dark blue AND then the white curtains will not work.

flip the sofa to face the windows

@Jinx - walls are gray. Furniture worked well in my last house, but fails miserably here in the new house.

I luv your inspiration pics. Reupholstering the chairs is definitely a possibility - presumably less expensive than buying new. Based on the two I like the most, I’ll have to lose the area rug, change fabric on chairs and maybe lighten up the coffee table. I do luv the darker gray and the blue walls. Thanks a bunch.

@A S - sofa is actually a full size not love seat, but it is overshadowed by the cavernous space. Tnx.

I think you need to set it up like you Had at your old house. The end table between the chairs. The angle less between them. Also where is the larger credenza? That would be better on the wall

I agree with@jinx that you have a wonderful style and love the traditional and more modern looks together.... love the chandeliers with your traditional pieces. it looks like you have more pieces that you had in your old house that i dont see in the new one... the long console, the art pieces and the gorgeous mirror. are you going to bring those in? the long console could go on the wall where you have the smaller console and then you could put your art above the console. that wall could be a wall of art. this is an example of a hallway, but you get the idea...

@Theresa - I do have all the art (still in storage) and the console. I thought the console looked too mid century modern, but I can bring it in. Thanks.

bring it all in... the mirror too, all the art... you have gorgeous things... take what you have and just re imagine where you put the pieces... you may need to bring in a couple new pieces, but I wouldn't go there yet until after you play with all the pieces you have... also, if you have other pieces in other rooms that you could play with, think about those items to bring in as well.

keep us posted once you bring in the rest of the pieces...

Tnx but first some reason this space is stumping me. Sadly, I have no vision, but I’ll use @Jinx’s pics.

Don’t be hard on yourself. Bring it in. Love stuff around and enjoy. You got this!

You might start with a new rug. It will change everything. Work from it for your other choices.

I love the wooden sculpture in the alcove and those sputnik chandeliers. I think the pictures of your previous house demonstrate your furniture should work in this house.

First, nothing looks good half moved in and moving boxes don't go with anything. I do think that the wall colour might unfortunately be at war with your furniture and making it a bit drab. I suspect your idea of painting one wall a rich blue will make the furniture pop more and you could accent with the blue. If those magnificent dining chairs with the interlaced woodwork are antiques, leave them be. But, if the seat fabric is more recent (and the budget allows) I think redoing them in a blue that compliments the feature wall blue and the gold chairs at the end would be amazing.

I wonder if part of the issue is the change in orientation of the sofa in relation to the rug. In the previous set up, It sat neatly in the borders of the rug. Now there's a lot of open rug to both sides, which makes it feel small rather than cozy. And your chairs are social distancing a bit too much ... bring them closer together, too much space between furniture makes it feel undersized, just like everything crammed together makes it feel too big/much.

Go easy on yourself, you're not even unpacked! You have lovely things, it will all "come together" in time.

@blueberrybundtcake / great point. Never thought of the orientation. I can move the sofa to the right with both chairs facing opposite, but then I’d have to move table 90 degrees it faces the sofa. Changed orientation of table may not be appealing but I’ll try it.

@blueberrybundtcake - changed the orientation. There is still social distancing 🤪 but I think it looks better. Thanks. Will try to post updates when I’ve unpacked more and painted the walls.

The window treatments in the new house are not doing the room and your furniture any favors. They are bland and generic and bring the room down. Either go with bare windows like in your last place or consider new curtains - longer, fuller and hung higher.

@izeve - yes, the plan is to remove the treatments. I don’t get a lot of sun (southern exposure). Waiting for impact windows and doors.
