My first suggestion is that the kiddos should not be using the stairs without strict supervision. I would put a gate at the bottom and top of the stairs.

If that doesn't work for you for some reason, just install quality no-slip tread pads. They come in many colors and patterns, including herringbone. It's only a temporary safety issue (unless you and your hubby think the stairs are a risk for you.)

My daughter wanted to make the wood stairs in her home safe for their two littles (4 yrs and 21 months) + their English Bulldogs. However, she liked the look of the wood treads without any type of covering.

She ordered transparent non-slip grips to use on the stair treads. They work very well + they are barely visible. There are many sold on Amazon + I'm sure other places. She purchased ones that were extra clear + easy to remove whenever she wanted (leaves no residue or damage to the wood tread).

The adhesive slip resistant grips on the stair treads below seem a little more noticeable - but it may just be the brand. My daughter's stairs are stained a medium dark brown and you really don't notice them.

I also like the look of wood staircase without a runner - so, I thought I'd mention these in case you'd rather not have one (they also are very inexpensive!)

@dani_m08 I’ve tried using treads, and with active family use some steps started shifting after 3 months. Commenters on Reddit have said the same thing. Maybe I had the wrong treads, but I decided to go with stair runners.
