The best weed killer is your hands, a garden fork, patience and repetition.

Is this a flowerbed? Are there plants you want to keep? How big an area of weeds is there?

Otherwise, any herbicide that targets broadleaved weeds (as opposed to grass-like ones) would work. But herbicides cannot distinguish between a weed or a more desirable plant so not easy to use in a planting bed with other plants. They are best for lawns.

Anyone used a torch? It might be a bit strange, It was for me too. If you can believe the online articles, and videos, blow torches are a really good way to get rid of weeds. I am thinking about buying one, I almost have to try the weed burning torch. Even if that thing does not work properly it surely looks fun to use. It would be like having a small flamethrower in your tool shed. I will have to be careful with this, If I burn something else beside the weed, my wife will kill me, I have done things like that before, you know how we men are...

Kong Strong a torch (I have the Weed Dragon from Lee Valley Tools) is fun. It is great for walkways and open spaces but I would not recommend it for a garden bed. A member on the Hosta Forum fried some of his desirable plants. They are a powerful tool and I predominantly use mine in a gravel parking area. It is most effective on seedlings. Dandelions eg. will re sprout from the root so I would still try to dig them out. I have however torched Dandelion seed heads ready to disperse and that is quite satisfying.

A propane powered weed torch is about as much fun as one can have while weeding! 😀 But it is not the best tool for all situations - won't work well on lawn weeds unless you don't mind a scorched lawn. And I'd be very careful if using in a planting bed with many valued plants around. But for weeds in gravel paths, patios or driveways, in cracks of concrete or larger expanses of bare soil (no wood mulches!!), it works a treat and is a heck of a lot of fun!

As noted, it only kills off the top growth, which is fine for most annual weeds but perennial weeds with deep roots - like dandelions or dock, horesetails, etc. - you will need repeat applications. If you can prevent development of the top growth, the roots will eventually die off.
