Giant fungus gnats?

My front porch is infested with some king of flying insect that flies slowly. It's black or dark, about a 1/4" in size. The only thing I can figure is fungus gnats that may have come from the "garden soil" I purchased. I used a lot of it in a planter box by the porch.

However these are lots bigger than a fungus gnat (internet says 1/16" to 1/8"). I put impatiens in the box and I don't think I can let them get really dry as suggested.

Any ideas?

i wonder if your county extension office might be aware of whats hatching.. in case it didnt come from the bagged media??

Can you get some and stick them in a baggie. Or slap some clear packaging tape on them. Then get out your magnifying glass. We had a sudden infestation of flying ants with thousands of them laying eggs in our record player turntable that is against an outside wall. Have lived here since 1976 an have never seen anything like that(up from under the house???) Not termites in our case. The pest guys looked and said it is a springtime thing with the flying ants. Mating. (eyes rolling)

Whatever you have you need to first ID them.
