I think it could work, but it really depends on how the light hits your house. Sometimes colors get washed out and appear lighter and brighter.

Look at this way, it is just paint. Paint is cheap.

Maybe, I'm not sure we'd be able to with out some major brick work. There's a court yard between the arch and the door.

HI -- Love this house -- very grand !I love the look of the double doors ! I think you should have a rich color not a light pastel . The only way I would have a light look , would be to have a weathered wood look , which would involve stripping the doors down to the bare wood , then doing a weathered grey wood stain . For a rich dark color , I would do a black cherry (purple). How about some new door hardware ? Something bigger and maybe with back plates . This would look good for the double doors . Also the lighting fixtures are too small . Bigger hanging lanterns would set off the house nicely. Try "Emtek" for the hardware and" Restoration Hardware" for the lighting fixtures .

At first, I thought, the color of that potted plant you can see in the second picture. But, after looking at your blue doors, again, the brick looks lighter than the overall picture. Is this true, or is the color of the picture a little off?

Since you already have blue doors, I would think you could do a little dry brushing over the darker blue with your Robin's Nest idea. Since you want to paint it, anyway, what could it hurt to try? If you do it right, it would look weathered and coastal.
On the safer side, you might try Black or a rich charcoal or go wild with Eggplant !

To me this house looks like it should have a wooden front door with some architectural hinges. A bit more rustic would add character. Maybe like this with a darker stain

I would suggest dark brown. I see you like coastal living. How would you feel about a coastal wreath in shades of blue on each double door to accent the dark brown and add a touch of the coastal look.

As you want the coastal look of blue yet want to be more impressive why not paint the door either black or white/cream leaving the square inserts the original colour or more seaside blue?

Thank you so much for the great ideas! We are changing out the hardware to an oiled rub bronze that looks black. Do you think that works with a dark color door? The weathered or wood idea is something we hadn't considered. We'll have to see how we could do that. If only we could just buy the doors in the picture, stupid budgets : ). Yes, I'm sure as soon as we paint the doors, lighting is next. Lanterns are a fun idea.

Can you post a pic of the hardware? Also, I believe if you go with a dark colored door, which is a good choice for your home you can still get the coastal look you want with accessories.

Is there room for a bench outdoor rug and planters near the front door? You just need to think elegant coastal. Here are some inspirational pics that may help.

It isn’t the front door I would concentrate on...just paint that the color of your window trim, which looks to be black in high gloss. Then I would paint that great tongue and groove ceiling a soft green/blue and buy two larger lights.

What great inspiration! We are going to go to Lowes and try stripping some of the door to see what the wood looks like underneath. I uploaded a picture to the BM site's color software and it does look better with dark colors. I like the look of the very dark purple or green. The browns seemed to be too much of the same color as the brick and ceiling. I'm uploading a picture of the new hardware.

Just remember that with a very dark purple you may loose the hardware on the door. They are both dark in color.

Also keep in mind that with an overhang, you won't see much of a darker color, it will appear cavelike in the shadows.

I agree with The DesigNest get a wood door that compliments the style of your house better. The doors you have don't look like they belong.. Your house isn't set up to have a painted front door that pops because you can't see it from the curb.. That works better for homes that don't have obstructions. Your home is beautiful btw! Purples appear to work better with cooler, gray exteriors; warm blues and turquoises seem to look particularly good with warm-colored exteriors. Either way, I hope you come back and show us what you do!

Pick up a gray out of the brick and make it just a a bit slate gray leaning only slightly toward blue to bring out the gorgeous detailing in the beautiful fan lights. Royal blue ages exteriors. Beautiful home!

This is lagoon, I painted over half moons so you could see what it would look like if doors were solid. Please don't laugh at my terrible painting of bronze hardware, lol. :)

I also shadowed in an estate sized doormat to go across the double doors. I also agree with judyg about using a pale blue for the ceiling of porch or overhang. Open air by sherwin Williams is a nice porch ceiling color.

This is SW cordovan with open air on ceiling. Ceiling wouldn't appear this bright in real life. :)

We also have a court yard area after a wall as you do. We repainted our door red. It looks grand. Red is a very cheery color and powerful. Pull up red doors on the web and you'll see what I mean,.

Well, we painted the door a dark olive color and brought the trim color into the mix from the garage doors. I'm hoping to be able to make it more coastal with new lights and accessories. Eventually, we'll get a new wooden door. I agree this one is not the best fit for the house. Thanks for all the great ideas!

if doing matchy..matchy with the brick follow this one rule, if you are a winter person GO DARK, if you are a summer/spring person, GO LIGHT AND THEN THERE IS THE TRIED AND TRUE RULE. paint it your favorite color.

I think it looks good! With those windows in the door, black also would have been a great choice IMHO.

Our house is dark grey and I wanted a pop of color. I also wanted a color the neighbors would not copy so I went with a hot pink to match my purple and pink garden. Surprised me how good it actually looks and the many compliments I receive on my choice...I say be brave, let your personality shine threw and have fun..:-)

Some tile or flagstone on your cement step in front of the olive door color you have chosen would really set it off and some really large light fixtures to match your hardware or bronze.

More lights, these are coastal/nautical
Not sure if they're really right for your house, maybe more traditional carriage lights would be better, but this is the style you talked about. :)

Please do not remove your brick arch. The color you chose is great, and thanks for moving that door mat it was driving me crazy off to one side. lol All you need now is larger light fixtures, and maybe something done to the ceiling. Right now it feels closed in, maybe its the angle of the picture. I am working on changing my front door too.

But it's all about the surround, your brick didn't get along with it at all, my green loves the blue :)
