I've been told probably rabbits. I hate this destruction when the creature does not even eat the pillaged part.

Are the bases cut off at a 45 degree angle or straight across? If it's at a 45 degree angle, it is absolutely due to a rodent as their gnawing teeth meet at a 45 degree angle. That includes mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits. If it's straight across, that is something else, like a cow, horse, deer, etc.

I would say it's a straight across cut, but will double check if new buds appear on the ground tomorrow morning.

My flower bed is about 2.5 ft. Versigny, Lady H and Quietness that were affected are about 2.5 ft tall as well. How that rodent could of possibly reach buds on a very top of those roses...

I also have a six ft fence around the property, several traps for rodents... Definetely, no deers or horses in our community, cows too.

Do you see any black liquid indicating katy did or grasshoppers?

I had that problem and it was rabbits. Spraying solved the issue.

What did you spray with?

Is it possible they are dropping off by themselves, like June drop in apples?

This problem cropped-up many years ago now. It turned out to be a 2-legged varment with a clipper just being mean.

I have rabbits, ground squirrels and roof rats, and all the buds and flowers I've seen on the ground have been cut at 45 degree angles.

Paola , can I ask a weird question.. do you have a tinge of red / orange on those buds ? And upon closer inspection, can you easily knock them off yourself on buds that do have that color ? I had a problem with my rose that the buds were dropping . Let me find my post .

Maybe you habe the same thing? Only one of my roses did this and is setting new buds and finally opening so I think it passed .

I am going to check ... Your post was very helpful. I do have all kind of issues with nutrients in the soil and in all my garden beds. After years of hesitation (afterall we are in CA), I am slowly starting to move towards growing roses in pots.

Just checked and the mistery continues. Here are some pics of my Versigny with a hanging bud, a new one since this morning. Although there is a bit of redness in the stems, I don't follow the connection. Couldn't see any bugs there either.

Hmmm. Well mine were not staying connected to the plant , they were falling clean off at the base where the leaves were , just where yours were . I’m not sure exactly either but it looks like the same problem or very close . I don’t think it’s animal :( I don’t know where the redness comes from but it’s something I noticed in the buds that would fall . It’s quite the mystery!!

Oh yes! If you can touch them and knock them off......I had that problem with my Perle d’Or in its first season and it also had leaves with reversed chlorosis. Instead of light leaves with darker veins it was veins whitening first. Also many of my other roses, especially those with Multiflora heritage, had signs of chlorosis. I tired supplementary iron, magnesium, calcium, silica and giving balanced Miracle Grow fertilizer, but nothing changed this problem. Finally I had a soil test done. I had plenty of everything except very low Nitrogen (which I already knew) AND zero detectable Manganese. Once I supplemented all my roses with manganese sulfate last fall and this spring they have had zero chlorosis. I also continue to give liquid fertilizer but I switched from Miracle Grow to Sea Grow by Grow More. Both have the trace elements, not just NPK. Although I am not sure why the Manganese supplied in those two fertilizers wasn’t enough in my soil. Anyway you might not have the same deficiency as my soil, but start with a balanced liquid fertilizer with trace minerals and see if that helps. Probably won’t help this flush, but the next one. This is assuming the buds are dropping on their own.

Looks to me like those breaks might be in abscission zones, and hence nothing external causing them. Could it be cultivation related?

I will start then adding Fish liquid fertilizer... My Quietness does the same thing.

Also make sure that your plants aren't having any kind of water stress. Temperature shock has potential to do that as well, but I think water stress may be one of the more common causes, though anything affecting the root Zone could potentially be a Cause. Manganese deficiency resembles iron deficiency, or nitrogen deficiency on the leaves.

To me, the first rose (on blue background) looks self-aborted...it's pretty yellow. The second rose looked like a weight was put on the bud...like a bird or something. I'm probably wrong..but just throwing this out as an idea.

Paola, like Lilyfinch and Stephanie, my roses have a tendency to drop buds off and on just as yours are doing. And like Stephanie, My Perle d'OR is prone. Marie Pavie also drops a number of buds as does Violette. Tamora is another one. I say "drop" because I don't think there is an exterior force at work in my garden. I think something is happening inside the.plant itself that causes the problem. Philip's comment about abscission zones is interesting because the cut is so clean, and it happens in almost exactly the same place on every bud that falls. Carol
