It is, Kat. And as you can see from all the leaves, my house is surrounded by huge trees so is always shaded. I’d like to hopefully allow a little more light to hit the door while still offering guests a little protection.

Since you have power right there, you might consider adding a recessed light under there to shine down on the door. It would look really pretty at night.

If you haven't, you might contact an arborist to look into limbing up some of the trees and opening up the canopy a bit to let in more sunlight.

Unlike the example you posted, your roof doesn't have a forward facing gable over your door.

You could add one that begins as a dormer a bit wider than the width of your stoop floor but stop it just beyond your overhang and use corbels rather than extend it farther and need posts.

A larger corbel could support a more extended roof.

I would LOVE to whitewash the brick. I have to try to find a painter who is familiar with Romabio.

Allison, it's not a difficult thing. it's already mixed and takes one coat, sometimes two. not a big deal.

I love your brick and would make the other changes before painting it. You might be surprised how the changes will make the brick look even better. Your house is adorable.

you know what's cool about lime washing w/Romabio? you could do full side to see if you like it. wouldn't cost that much or take too much time. if you didn't like it, it washes off w/in 72 hours. I mean, where are you going to get a trial like that? you have nothing to lose. whitewash it.

Thanks everybody. (For some reason I didn’t get notifications that anyone had replied until just now.) My tastes run toward traditional with a twist, so I’m having a hard time deciding how to do the gable part of the portico. I did talk to my phenomenal GC, and he’s put me on his schedule for the fall, so keep those ideas coming! I’ll post more pix of what I like.

As you can see, I’m all over the place. I can widen the stoop. Should I plan on doing that?

Just wanted to update this post. I finally pulled the trigger and went with a traditional portico. It’s not quite done but 95% there. I love it.
