I get the whole photo thing, but like I said, I can't get any photos right now. I was hoping someone on here would have had a similar house with similar closets. Wasn't looking for a pro.

I know exactly what you’re talking about...lived in LB with those closets for a while. Here’s an example I found online of what we had.

I like the idea of replacing with IKEA cabinets so you can make the most of of the space. I think that could be more valuable than keeping them just for the vintage look-if only for your sanity! I had an idea to switch to non-slider doors to get the most out of the center space. We stored things in boxes in the upper space but useless for everyday use. You can’t easily do double rods-the bottom area was too short.

Not a pro. Just as new/modern is not always better, Antique/older is not always better -- what actually works for you is better.

If you have a garage or basement with a wall that width, consider moving these there and build in closets that you find usable. If these don't have backs -- if the room's drywall is the back of the cabinet, you could have your carpenter/closet/cabinet maker add a plywood back to them and use them for storing stuff you rarely use -- or you might even be able to sell them

An alternative to building in closets could be armoires or wardrobes.

Hi, yeah, no, they have no backs, just the original plaster walls. They can't be removed in one piece. Not worth trying to repurpose them after the demo.

You can probably retrofit IKEA wardrobes so they look built in. I would try searching for IKEA pax hacks. I bet you'll find tons of inspiration.

IMO there are things I loved about my 1956 MCM ranch but the kitchen and batrooms were not 2 of them I find the closets all through the house small ans awkward to use the whole space. I have no problem replacing “vintag: with something that just plain functions better. I love the Pax system from Ikea and if we had not done a walkin closet that would have been my other choice.
