1950's fitted wardrobes

last modified: 6 years ago

My house is a Southern California stucco ranch built in 1950. The bedroom closets/wardrobes are the all wood fitted type with a raised floor, sliding doors that sit on metal tracks and cabinets above. A lot of people like to keep them because they are original/vintage but the doors are a pain and I'm 5-02 so the upper cabinets are kind of useless. I'm trying to decide whether to keep them and have all the old paint layers stripped down to the bare wood or just gut them out to the plaster (which might break off during the demo) and have something modern like Ikea closets installed. Has anyone remodeled this type of closet and if so, what did you do? I can't get good photos of them to post here.
