NEED HELP WITH ORANGE CABINETS!

Does anyone have any ideas to best & cheapest way to change these outdated cabinets?

Are you looking to change the color only, the layout or the cabinets themselves? I think they are super fun but I'm not sure the brown tones of the floor and counters are helping.

What does the rest of the space look like? Do you like the modern look, just not the color? Here are some kitchens with very orange-toned cabinets that bring in grey and a touch of black, and even slate for a more rustic touch which might not work with such a modern look..

Some accessories could help as well - green plants are a great neutral to echo the greenery outside the windows.

If that is real wood, there are cabinet refinishing services that can lighten or darken your existing cabinets - check into those. Assuming they are birch or maple, they would look stunning in a lighter shade with a touch of brown and work with the floors and counters. Then choose black for stools.

There's nothing wrong with your cabinets. You may not like them, but don't blame that on them being "outdated."

Wow, I guess I’m so inexperienced. Thank you for opening up my eyes and mind. I really appreciate your feedback.

I also love those modern cabinets! Not run of the mill.

    I love that kitchen.

Are the barstools yours? I agree that the kitchen is fantastic but maybe changing out the barstools to a contrasting color would help a bit.

Yes, that would an awesome contrast.

The kitchen and the barstools are gorgeous. I am completely jealous of that kitchen -- so cool! don't change a thing!

Nice layout, but I would stain it to read a little warmer because it does look orange.

I'm a white kitchen fan but I would not touch those cabinets. The cabinets look posh but, to me, the speckled granite, fan, and the spindly lighting are the outliers. They look like builder grade 2009.

Is that an ocean view? the only thing I would do at the moment is change the ceiling fan to something more chic, but I can't really get a good look it.

    Yes, it’s ocean.

If there anyway I can get in touch with live_wire_Oak? Thanks

seriously. it's amazing. change the stools. and not so many. and your view. oh my swoon.

Very nice kitchen except for that stain color. The good news is that all the surfaces are flat. You could send all the fronts out to be stripped and stained & have the curved island done onsite.

    What color would you like?

I have found that colors in realtor photos can look quite different in real life. The cabinetry may not be as orange looking as it appears in the photos.

I agree, change the ceiling fan to a more modern one, also in white. I would probably change the pendants to larger ones as well.

Have you even bought the house yet?

No, just getting ideas before purchasing.

I would remove the fan and change the bar stools. Live with it. I do think the floors are actually what seems off. Or maybe eventually change the counters to soapstone or white quartz

This is a truly awesome kitchen. High end.

What cabinets? All I see is that magnificent ocean!

I would strip the finish and clear coat the wood — you are dealing with wood veneer here, so this is incredibly delicate work. While the kitchen is clearly bespoke, it is orange, and that finish is dated, and if you don’t like it, change it. There is no “cheapest” way of doing this. You will have to hire someone skilled to do the work.

It will be a very expensive proposition to have this stripped and re-stained. Much less expensive to have it painted. We looked into it for our stained kitchen cabinets a few years ago and decided to just leave them. The good news is that wood, and warmer wood colours, are coming back into style after so many years of cool colours being in style. Don't make the mistake of changing this just as it's coming back in.

    Personally I think it's beautiful.

I think I’d change the lighting and fan. I quite like everything else. If you do paint the cabinets, white would be nice. I don’t know if the granite is considered dated, but I see speckled surfaces in modern kitchens like this a lot.

    on floors too!

Change the fan and increase the size of the pendants. The stools are cool, so if they sell with the house just keep them. However, the splayed legs on those look like a tripping hazard and they'll drive your Roomba crazy. If they're comfortable to sit on, good. If not, then replace them. I'm guessing the window treatment may be vertical blinds so those would have to go. Unless terrible sun comes in those windows and heats things up, I would leave the windows open to the view. If you do need protection from glare and sun fade, consider blinds that are remotely controlled and feel "barely there" or (if windows are no longer under warranty) install hi-tec UV film that won't block that view.

I have no idea why anyone would want to change anything in this kitchen just to make it look like everything else we always see. Embrace its beauty and originality. I know I could think of a million other ways to spend the money you would spend to change what is already gorgeous. Heck, I would take all that money and have some high-end parties in that kitchen and invite all my family and friends. Treat them to some gourmet food and drinks in that kitchen and I'm sure they would all think it is the most beautiful kitchen they've ever seen :)

Haven’t read all the comments but dang! Those cabinets are COOOOOL!

Thank god it’s not another white and grey kitchen.

Thank you all so very much. A lotto ponder.

Your kitchen is awesome! Even the stools!

You wrote "lotto" meaning "lot to", but to me your Lotto winner! (Lottery Winner) ;-)

I wish I was a lotto winner 😂 unfortunately not, just a misspelling!

I love them. I think the color looks amazing with the blue (ocean and sky) and green (plants) backdrop. Absolutely perfect tropical and exotic feel. Of course it’s your decision, but I hope you don’t paint or stain them lighter.

I'm not a pro so I'm glad live-wire and others chimed in. I love the cabinets and cool bar stools! (And that view!) I imagine those cabinets with chunky white Corian counters and a pale blue tile on the wall to reflect that delicious water view. New lights (and maybe some bulb types will help tone down the orange) and perhaps a pale floor in the future. I would loooove that kitchen! And can I please come to your first party? I promise to social distance on the balcony/deck. :)

Paint the cabinets a white and match the color on the walls and ceiling.

Remove the 1980s blinds from the windows and change the ceiling fan.

The hanging lights are distracting and not necessary. Remove them.

Well, I'll be the odd man out. I hate it. My opinion of your house doesn't really matter if you love it, but since you're asking about how to fix it ...

I'm not a modern person, so maybe I just "don't understand the vision," but even ignoring the modern stylings, this does not look like a very functional kitchen ...

If I'm interpretting things correctly, the sink is by the windows, the cooktop is to the right of the microwave and pantry, and the fridge is to the left of that? How does the work triangle work? Is there a space next to the fridge to set items? I guess reach over to the island or do the juggling act. Also, if someone's looking in the pantry under the microwave, I imagine one would have to go around the island to get by them.

It certainly does look like it cost a lot to put in, complete with soffits and lighting to match the curve of the island, I just can't see cooking in it. I'd want the fridge closer in, but with all those windows, it would probably mean moving over the stove, so the two could still both be on that wall, and possibly moving the sink to the island for a more functional triangle, though I could probably get used to the sink where it is.

To clarify, I am not a white or white and grey kitchen person either, and I don't really care what trending or not. Just focusing on style, I like nice stained woods, preferably darker toned, actual knobs on my cabinets and drawers. I can appreciate many kitchens that wouldn't be my style, but I have to be able to see myself cooking in them. If my mise en place was perfect, I might be able to suffer through this kitchen, but I know I'll want something from the fridge while I cook because the risotto just needs a bit more cheese, or whatever, and either way the veggies are going from the fridge to the sink when prepping, so even with better planning, I still don't want the fridge that far away.

Again, though, that's me ... if the organization of this kitchen works for you, great! We don't all cook the same way.

Anyways, on how to fix the orange? Don't know that those will be refinishable, but changing the stools would break up the color a bit, and changing the counter and backsplash would help, as well, with color variation.
